Default best used truck/towing rig for under $2000?

Since Katie and I bought a house last October, I've been finding more and more reasons to finally buy a truck for occasional housework or towing a car trailer. Unfortunately, I short shortsightedly bought a small point a to point b vehicle on a loan before we bought the house and there isn't currently a good way of trading that in for a newer truck so what i'm looking for is a under $2000 truck/work van/conversion van that meets the following criteria.

    $2000 or less
must be able to tow a car trailer with load (hitch doesn't need to be already installed
    preferably newer than 1990
    moderately reliable

    looking for suggestions.

I have several friends with 2500 series Suburbans and Tahoes and they can tow loaded car trailers. I would think older, higher mile, examples would fit your budget.

Their GMC versions should basically be the same except for trim and interior trim for the most part right?

Any 1990s Ford with the 460 tows just as good as the diesels, if you don't mind about 5 mpg average.

If you get into a 2000ish or newer truck the towing capacity goes way up. To the point a 1/2 ton is fine for towing most small car's.

EDIT: 2000 is a generic model year. What you are looking for is a LS engine GM product or a MOD motor Ford. I have towed the same trailer with both a 1997 2500 Suburban with a 454 and my 03 2500 Silverado with a 6.0 and the difference was night and day.

I have a 2003 Chev 2500 2wd I have about 3k into. It's ugly and Rusty but low miles (140ish K). I'm going to be selling it after we move in a month for 2k or so if you can wait that long.

I would say your best bet for the price range is a Ferd F250 with the 460 V8. She may not be pretty but everyone says it'll handle whatever you throw at it. Just don't daily drive it as they like to drink gas.
