Default My brother is car shopping

My brother is doing some car shopping for the first time in ten years. His last vehicle was a '01 S10, this time he's ideally looking for:

    - 25+ mpg highway
    - wagon or hatchback
    - manual preferred, but not a deal breaker
    - under $10k, possibly $15-20k for the perfect car

He's been borrowing our dad's '16 Impreza hatch for a little while and seems to enjoy it. Are there any fixed TDI sportwagens out there still, that would actually be perfect. Did they make TSI sportwagens? He has also shown interest in the Focus hatch.

If you see anything feel free to post it here or if you have any models you think he should look into.

The buy back TDIs are all going to be well over his budget unless they start selling back some of the older than 2015 models which is unlikely. There are 1.8L TSI sportwagons, I think Palmer has one currently. The MK6 had the 2.5L 5cyl as well, that engine should see 25mpg HWY and if he's cool in an Impreza the mileage should be just fine. I know you could also find a mk6 Golf with the 2.5L as well, those prices will be in his range (and mk5/6 GTIs...)

In reality the current generation Focus is the best bet. Tons of them to choose from and they have prices well into the low teens and getting to that 10K mark for something with a couple miles on it. You can find them with zero options all the way to the Titanium under 15K all day, even a bunch with sub 30K miles.

The 2012+ Ford Focus is a good car. As long as you buy a manual trans.

Print says a 2.5L VW will get decent mileage, but I had a Mk5 Jetta with a 2.5L and got maybe 26 or 27MPG on the highway is I was lucky. Most tanks of gas I averaged 24 MPG.

If he really wants mileage, have him look at Mazdas. The Mazda3 gets damn good mileage and they have a 5 door.

Do Mazdas still fall apart from rust after 3 years?

It's up to, like, 6 years now. Maybe.

    I like mazdas in general.

They are pretty damn reliable, and almost depreciate like a "normal" car does. My car-averse younger brother has had a 2006 3 sedan since new, and it's been nearly perfect despite his best efforts. Fun to drive too.

The 6 is pretty sharp too, I know a couple people with these things right now, and they have been super happy. No hatch/wagon option though, but im sure you know that.

For a disgusting and stupid crossover that sucks, the CX-5 seems like it's worth a shit when it comes to driving fun.

Also, the answer is always a Miata.

As far as I'm concerned, the answer is never miata, unless the questions is "what kind of car is that" when asking about one.

shame about the rust, it'd be nice if they could figure that shit out.

We have friends moving out of the country next month and are selling their base '13 Impreza hatch (auto) and base '12? Fiesta sedan (manual). I think they wouldn't want much for either. I can find the details and asking price

Love it, have they improved the 2.5 much over the last couple years that you've heard of?
