Also why not get an older F250 with the 7.3 powerstroke? Or even a 2500 duramax.
I love our F350 with the 7.3. My Girlfriends dad daily drives a Silverado with the duramax and get over 20 mpg. You can get 20+ easily, have more than enough room and actually be able haul/tow something.
Because cost isn't the only concern? Most people couldn't even PARK a F250/350 in their garage. They are a pain in the dick to daily drive.

Since he is concerned about mileage - buying a small SUV (which he is looking for) with a gas engine, would be cheaper per mile to drive than a 3/4-ton truck with a diesel. Nevermind the maintenance costs are quite high on a HD truck vs. small SUV.

2013 Escape gets 30+ highway, and should be *close* to your budget.

I was looking for the exactly the same thing for a few years and ended up buying a jetta TDI. My only regret is not buying a sportwagen

    Pretty much.

Yeah, we currently have a 3rd Gen CR-V, and besides just feeling like a chic-car (suv), its a dog even hauling around a little utility trailer. That's why I thought a diesel would be perfect...

My TDI Sportwagen with the 6 speed manual trans is as close as you're going to get. Throw snow tires on it and it's fairly unstoppable in the snow.
Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

I think the 4BT would be a tough swap in the XJ... I'm having problems with a smaller 4AT cummins engine (2.3L 4AT vs. 3.9L 4BT). But yeah, a 4-cylinder (or 5 cylinder benz) diesel in an XJ is sweet!

After my second Jeep diesel is finished this spring, the next swap is my duramax suburban swap...

Hmmm, I might have to start looking into these:
    http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...64807172&Log=0

Higher milage ones have dropped right down into my price range. I'll have to do more research to see how reliable they are when they get into higher miles. You would think they could go 200k+ no problem being a diesel, but what do I know...

That's pretty cool, but as a lot of others stated in that thread, if you're going to go through the trouble of a swap, why pick a Liberty, which already came with an (albeit crappy) diesel?

It's not the motor that's the problem, it's all the fancy electronic bits that control the rest of the car.

    Hey Jake!

If you're looking at Touareg's take a look here, clubtouareg.com, for what to look for. I have one and LOVE it (albeit a V6 gas)!

From what i've read on tdiclub.com, the V10 TDI is very expensive to own/operate/maintain... Probably why the price for one has dropped like a rock in the last couple years.

But, that being said, I would love to own one!

Yeah, I have a friend with one. It's sweet. But he's certainly put quite a bit of sweat equity and money into operating it. Drive shafts. Waste gates. Etc. Etc.
