    Default Supercharged 2.8 or 1.8BT

Im getting a B5 avant. Has a 2.8 (yes 30v) and was wondering if I should supercharge it, or do a 1.8BT swap. There are pros and cons to each setup. Whatcha think?

Also keeping in mind, quick, reliable, DD power/engine.

PES sells a kit, they often go for ~2k used.

Stock pistons can't handle a whole lot. when I was researching it, I saw a few pics of pistons with holes in them.

Yeah I know about the pes, g1 and g2 kits. And of course typical ko4/ frankenturbo/ BT/stg 3 setups for 1.8s. Done a lot of reaserch. Like I said, pros and cons to both setups. It's def a good debate lol.

As someone who used to love their 1.8T (non big turbo) ... they can be a big pain in the ass as they get older to daily drive. And they only get worse as you add the go fast bits. When they are running great, they are a blast... but as they age it becomes a labor of love. Just lots and lots of stuff going on with that thing and it all seems to give up the ghost around 150,000 miles.

For the sake of wrench turning, I say 1.8T

Ever try to change an alternator on a 30V 2.8? or thermostat?

I love my 1.8t. And they are easy to mod/fix etc. I've alwas heard the 2.8s are super dependable also. It's just a hard choice. Thought about BT pnp aeb setup. Or even just a bigger turbo. And then charging a 2.8 drop a pulley size, water meth, and possible interxooler sounds fun too. Lol.

do a 2.8 with a higher compression, like 13.1 w/ forged internals and run e85 with a great tune and see 280hp N/A

    its been done.

As fun as that sounds, I wonder what kind of MPG that thing got?

Aren't the only thing that really limits the 2.8 is the rods and pistons?

Holy Balls I just looked at PES website, $3500 for a S/C kit for B5.

the 30v has the same rods as the s4, but the pistons are pretty weak and cant handle boost very well. as far as mileage goes, im not sure i didnt see anything on that.

and you can source used kits for around 2k or on ebay PES sometimes puts them up for about 3k

    I won't lie, a supercharged 30v sounds pretty badass.
