Default GM closes 4 plants, hummer

    GM is FUCKED FUCKED FUCKED.

I guess it shows that when 60% of the vehicles you sell get 15mpg you cant survive in a $4/gallon world.

Of course they are screwed. Even their high mileage cars don't get good mileage.

My dad has a Chevy Aveo that they claim gets like 34 mpg. I borrowed it for a week when I was without a car and I only got an average of 23 mpg! The reason for the horrible mileage was the car is so low on power that when I was on the freeway I had to floor it everywhere I went just to keep up with traffic.

If they want to get back in the green they need to start makeing cars like they care about their consumers, like they used to in the 1960's and early 70's.

You want an example of a mileage miracle.... Toyota knows how to get mpg's. My xB has the worst aerodynacs of any small car out there and it is underpowered with a 105hp 1.5L motor yet I still averaged 37 mpg on my trip to Grand Rapids last weekend.

I can never see GM doing that anytime soon.

I agree. I had a 1990 Honda Civic Si and on a trip From Green Bay to Minneapolis I averaged 42 mpg with an engine two seats and a decent sized tv in the back. The Japanese know how to get mileage.

my toyota tercel (laugh i know it sucks) gets no worse than 34 when im beating on it and usually 38-40. I just took a trip to madison in it and got 43 combined highway and around town in madison. This little car is great and it may have only 90hp but that has never been an issue for everyday driving. We dont need 300hp V8 sedans to go to the gym and get the groceries.

What we need are more small 4cl turbo diesels...

I believe the Chevy Sprint and Geo Metro were the only two cars GM has ever 'marketed' that got 40-50 mpg ratings. Since they were both technically Suzuki's, you can't even really say that these are true 'red blood American' GM cars.

Also, from what I can surmise, GM has stayed alive mainly from their full-size truck and SUV sales ...which is exactly what everyone needs to drive to the office. They sure as hell can't design a 'good looking' car anymore, or even put one together for that matter. When I see them trying to market the new Suburban 'Hybrid' that gets 20 city / 20 highway mileage, I stare in disbelief. They are the surveyor of their own downfall if they hadn't seen this change in the market coming. Way to go, GM.

I did, before it was even posted up here.

Thankfully, Bloomberg.com is my home page.

The product line that once brought them in a huge slice of their profit is now, not as profitable as it was once was.

I don't see how one logically concludes because 4 plants are closing, GM is fucked. Maybe it was the verb choice.

Trouble, sure, they have some serious future planning to make headway on.

If you read, and comprehended, the article, you would have seen that GM is changing up their business plan, which happens in business.

From an investor's stand point, I bought stock in GM about 4 months ago, as this closing of plants/changes in product line up was/is a discussion piece of the Board for sometime. Thus, stock was/is at a low. Buying is cheap, a change in business plans could yield significant growth. But that is a seperate topic.

On a side note, Porsche's stock has dropped 36% from their alltime high back in Oct. Most Euro trade analyist have rated Porsche's stock as a "underperformer"

Just because GM's stock is cheap doesn't mean you should buy it. GM isn't going to make a comeback for quite a long time, if ever.

I guess we were all due for another GM-bashing thread. Okay kids, get it all out of your system.. I'm sure you've all noticed we also have a Ford bashing thread. Don't forget to post there as well. I'll start up a Bush bashing thread, then maybe we can go on a never-ending rant-fest, of which I'm sure will save this country and solve all of its problems.
