I put up with the same 5th gear in my jetta for a while, and only recently swapped it because I drive to duluth and back on a somewhat regular basis with that car. even then, I only swapped it because I got a gearbox for free with a taller 5th. I wouldn't have even bothered if I didn't have the stuff around.
for a non-daily, I don't care. it's not *that* buzzy.
ya, on my long trips at 4k~ rpm the whole time, the 16v burns oil, however, the not downshifting to pass/slow down is pretty nice
