I even called the guy and he was a bit of a tool. He said it was a diplomat's car and he had all the paperwork, so it is a grey market car (if he was not blowing smoke). The thing that bothered me was the lack of an M-Tech steering wheel, I figured it had been in an accident but he assured me it had not. Maybe it was just a hack at federalizing a european car?

Yeah, the four spoke steering wheel is weird.

Hack job or not, I would have a hard time turning down that color combination.

I would expect to see rear foglights if it was a euro spec car. These typically aren't removed when cars are federalized. An easy way to tell for sure would be to look at the B pillar. Imported cars should have a sticker with details of the importer and importation date next to the VIN plate. Sure is a sharp looking E39 regardless!

You make a good point. It's just that I would prefer to buy a modified car from the person who purchased the parts and had them installed rather than a dealer who tries to pass the car off as something it is not (it's not an M package car and, even if it was, there were significantly more than 343 offered in the U.S. market).

The M package was only available on 2001-2003 E39s (and in the U.S. ONLY on 2003s). The M package never included an M5 cluster. That alone scares me - how do we know the mileage is accurate? Did they swap out the entire cluster or just the gauge faces?

The color combination is amazing though. The leather really works with wood trim and I normally despise wood trim. The car needs matching headliner and a/b/c pillars though (black suede would look nice if you couldn't match the seats). The color combo alone has me wanting the car really, really badly. If it was a 2001-2003 E39 I would be much more seriously interested (updated tail lights among many other improvements). The price is a bit high for a 1998.

I would avoid 5k auto at all costs, they buy cheap, shitty cars and sell them at a 3-4x markup on what they paid. I have delt with them in the past, they suck, stay away.

Hell of a candidate for a 3.4 swap (or bigger).
