Long time ex-driver of euros here. I've owned several vw's, a couple mkII's, a few mkIII's by me or in the family and two mkIV's. Driven them up to mkV's anyway. Driven and drooled over many, many BMW's, but my favorite is their late 90's 540i right out of the box so far. Had my foot in some not so great Porsche cars and I've been let down by some standard Audi models. Never driven an S4 or S8 though. Euros were my passion for the first half of my driving life for sure until about 4 or 5 years ago anyway.
I don't do euros anymore but I still have a lot of love for BMW and some for Porsche. Their parts are ridiculously priced and their maintenance is something a guy with a bad back just grew tired of. The euros are preposterously fun around corners but suspension technology like that has been shared and spread to all makes and models within the auto world. The only thing that cannot be compensated for on the other cars is the weight balance achieved by makes like BMW, which sets them apart. So, respect to the euros on the handling and in some cases their aeros.
That being said, I likely will never buy or own another euro but they will always be in my family as well as a major part of my past and if I ever have $ to burn I might just kick the tires on a BMW as something to drive while I get my top secret project going.
I was a part of the VW scene in the early to mid 2000's, it was a ride man. Good times, good people, good parties, good gtg's (official and unofficial) and a good community. I was surprised to find this forum as I thought the scene had pretty much died after the fall of S&L, demise of Volksport, etc.

Daily driver/winter beater is a 300 hp Ram, she holds her own but really I tune it just enough to keep it fun but functional. Gotta pull the performance PCM for winter though. The real prize is my project, it's a classic Mopar, but not 50 years classic, just 30. Beyond that info, it's top secret but you know a former VW guy loves his motor swaps (hint, hint). 30 year Mopar classic... and the only other clue is "Sleeper Reaper" listed for your car. I'm forced to guess L platform (Omni/Charger/Rampage).
