In all honesty the mk 6 is just a mk5 with different body panels and interior. The 7 is an entirely new car.

The up! would make so much sense here. Its the goofy car that gets good gas mileage that VW USA and this country really needs. They were pretty cool in person odd yes but thats what it was meant to be.

Even the MK4 and MK5 had decent runs too. Apparently VW is trying to capitalize on the new model syndrome AKA the extra sales they get because it is a new model. They must have figured it was cheaper than trying to promote the same model for 5+ years...

My question is, are they already taking pre-orders on the MK8? Or which will come first, Gran Turismo 6 or the MK13?

There are a lot of reasons. Design to production is getting easier and faster. Governments are changing and increasing regulations more quickly. Increased globalization mean increased competition means car companies have to push themselves further and faster to remain competitive. Marketing new models works well to get people to buy new cars. The tide of wealth in the world is slowly and steadily increasing while new cars (even if more expensive numerically) are getting cheaper as a percentage of wealth generated per person meaning more people can have newer and/or more cars per family.

The mk6 was just what VW wanted to do with the mk5 (build wise) but figured out how to do it a little too late. They said the 6 would be a short run right when it came out.
