History:
I bought this car back in 2006'ish It was built for the mexican market and imported to the USA at some point. So it came with a KPH cluster, 1.8L engine and no options. No factory AC, no power anything. The only option is rear defrost and a radio. So, less stuff to break and less weight. It also has a 9 digit VIN which is very uncommon and kind of cool.
I swapped all the VR6 stuff over from a 95 GTI VR6 back in 2007.
In 2008 I put in a different VR6 engine. I went through this engine and replaced every seal, gasket and plastic part possible. It has all new chains and everything was cleaned and painted. The block was recently rebuilt before I got it and the head is a big valve head that was expensive. It has schrick 268 cams, custom matched GIAC chip and a bunch of other stuff.
The car is really fast, loud and fun. It makes a ton of power.
The car had 150k Kilometers on it when I bought it...yes Kilometeres
The 95 GTI had about 130k miles on it that the swap came from
The new engine has really low miles
the cluster shows 135k miles on it. I have only driven it 5k miles in that amount of time.
The car sits in a garage most of the time so that is why I am selling it. I never drive it. I haven't driven it in the winter since I bought it. It needs to be driven. I have other projects, etc etc.
List of mods and updates that I can think of:
big valve head done by jim Orell @ CCH, Competition Cylinder heads and sold by Turn2. (stock exhaust, big intake,37mm)
FK 60/40 suspension
new ball joints
TT 2.5" exhaust
Turn2 test pipe
Shrick 268 cams
GIAC cam & BVH custom made chip
bored and welded down pipe
bored exhaust manifolds
bored throttle body
turn2 cold air intake
fully synthetic engine oil
GM syncromesh trans fluid
new slave cylinder
MK4 plug wires
new NGK plugs
light weight lifters
BFI stage 2 derlin mounts
MK3 wolfsburg sport seats from a 99 Jetta
Real euro VR6 lip
Lots of little OE+mods
and probably more...
I also have receipts of all the engine gaskets, seals, timing stuff, etc.
The bad
I store the car in a building at my shop and it was probably 60 degrees in there. I pulled it out of storage and it was 85 and sunny. I think the fast cool to hot change made the glue fail on the headliner and it dropped just like that. So the headliner is sagged baggy.
a few dings here and there on the body.
No visible rust unless you search for it.
The dash vent selector doesn't work. I manually moved it to defrost since that is the only one I use.
I put on a Jetta front end and the paint doesn't match exactly right. It depends on the light. This is the fenders, hood, bumper.
The roof has some hail dings.
Reverse occasionally clunks in... does not if you engage another gear first
