Did she slip it into low gear?
Funny story:
My uncle borrowed my dad's pickup when I was young. He called him frantic that the transmission had gone out. He had it towed to a shop, and he had the transfer case in neutral.
If the Cat Converter is totally clogged up It wont go very fast... happened to my dodge ram truck.Thought for sure it was the trans, but the cat was melted and couldn't get any air past making it go like 20 mph.
it's a jeep thing

That might help, and doing some Googling, there seems to be issues with the input/output shaft speed sensors on the trans with these.
Good luck.
