Default Anyone have special VW tool 3366? Have a P0171 code...

Need to do the cam tensioner gasket and half moon on my 2004 AWM 1.8t.

Seems to be leaking from that area, but I was told it would only be oil and not air coming from that area... Which makes sense since it is an oil seal.

Maybe I just need some help with that code itself.
With the cel on: the SAIP does not turn on and the engine does not start at a higher rpm like usual upon cold start up, mileage seems to be the same as before the code kicked in, I made this http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page...boostleak.html and did the deed and the air is leaking from the cam tensioner area.

I suck at electronics and vacuum shit. Please help it you can! I believe the leak to be coming from this area as the vacuum hoses seem fine and the pcv system seems fine too. I just want to fix what is wrong and not dump money into things that I can do later.

Thanks in advance for your help to this nOOb.

    Wait...

You pressurize your intake to check for boost leaks and your tensioner gasket passes air?

    Yeah... That shouldn't happen.

edit: Hold on, if OP is pressure testing from the TIP and didn't disconnect the PCV system that would be possible, correct?

No. I'm pretty sure his PCV valve should hold the pressure.

I've always been unsure of that. The TIP is under vacuum during normal operation, being that it's before the compressor.

I wish I knew more about how the PCV valve/system worked. Some people say you should disconnect it when pressure testing and some people say you don't.

Did not disconnect the PCV system. Car seems to run well when not under boost. When you give it some beans (merging, accelerating out of corners) seems to be doggy. Mileage is still good though returning 33.3mpg's via the OBC on last nights trip.

Air is leaking from the cam tensioner area fo sho. Should be or shouldn't be, but it is for a still undetermined reason.

Thanks for the inputs. I hope to meet with Justin as he says he is an expert in all things 1.8t

I didn't use the word expert, but I know enough.

air will leak past that seal if its worn out and leaking and there isnt silicone there. When a new cct gasket and half moon are installed, silicone is to be used in the correct spots, including the rubber seal .

^^I have read that too and in my case it takes a decent amount of PSI to get the leak to show; must be a tiny leak.

Justin stopped over yesterday after his 10 hr day of work (thanks again, you are the man, chocolate chip cookies are going to happen this weekend) and we poked around the bay for awhile. Cleaned the MAF, he confirmed my suspicion of the leak area and what to do, and he Vagcom-ed the shizz out of the Passat.

I'll see how it does the next couple of days since I did not get a chance to drive around last night since I am old and need my pillow early these days. Thanks for the thoughts and I will update this as I notice new things or discover new leaks

There were codes for system too lean (bank 1) and for MAF value too high. I have the log on my laptop and I'll post it after work today.

Popped back on right away after cold start up today. SAI does not seem to be activating at any time, do not know if CEL and SAI are in cahoots.
