put it on the same dyno as a gti and results were pretty eye opening, the comments make me smile as well being a mk6 gti owner.

    Sigh. From the article:

"Let's see, yup, 173 horsepower at the wheels is about what we'd expect based on driveline loss... its fuel cut is exactly where the tach touches red at 7400 rpm"

No mention of anything being over-rated. People fixate too much on horsepower as a metric for measuring cars.

"First, let me be absolutely clear on this -- on no planet is a front wheel-drive hatchback an equal substitute for a proper rear wheel-drive sports car. All we're comparing here is two cars of equal rated power, cylinder count and displacement that are offered at the same price point"

Anyone who actually drives their cars will agree with the first sentence. This is me being opinionated kinda, but physics does not lie. Hell, it might even over come the most deluded of automotive fanbois...the VW owner. Ha.

    From the comments:

    "
    1. The GTI is a fat tub-o-lard compared to the FRS
    2. A turbo FRS would have about 275 HP at the flywheel (Good luck keeping up, buttercup!)
    3. No torque steer in FRS' future
    4. No RWD handling balance in the VW's future.
Moral of the story: The FRS has infinite potential, while the VW has infinite limitations. Choose wisely"

    Pretty much sums it up.

I sat in one of these last night (Subie version). One thing I can definitively say, the rear seats seem to be completely useless if anyone taller than 5'8" is in the front. I'm 5'10" and with the front seat set to where I would comfortably drive, or ride there was about 3-4 inches from the front edge of the rear seat to the back of the front seat. It was hilarious. I can't imagine anyone adult riding back there, ever.

It is a neat little car though. From my understanding they are not very quick, but are very, very tossable and balanced. I'd love to autocross one with some sticky rubber and see how well it responds to being driven in anger

This. It's not meant to be super powerful and fast in a straight line. The car looks like a blast to toss around.

Although I'm sure I wouldn't mind a BRZ with the STi treatment.

When he was flooring it, I was cracking up. It felt so incredibly slow. Like my Volt feels faster. Yet, I just looked up the 0-60 time on MotorTrend. They had it at 6.4 seconds.

That's pretty quick all things considered.

But it really didn't feel that quick. Odd.

Agree, would like to thrash it on a road course.

Looks like torque is lacking a bit.

Probably not the end of the world on a car with a 101" wheelbase.

There is a nice comparison chart in this thread:
