Passat TDI sets distance record on single tank

i've really had my eye on the new Passat TDI -- i really think this might be my first new car purchase, and this article only makes me want to have one even more...

1,626 miles on a single tank!

The reason it gets such good gas mileage is that nobody who owns one wants to be seen at the gas station for fear of bullies taking their lunch money.

I know top gear did the v6tdi audi a8 drive and got like 900miles on one tank. southern most part of england to northern most part and back on one tank one drive.

That couple holds all sorts of MPG records. Wasnt the average MPG around 84? That cant possibly be sustainable across that life of the car, though.

I know top gear did the v6tdi audi a8 drive and got like 900miles on one tank. southern most part of england to northern most part and back on one tank one drive.

I had thought it was a 4.0l V8 TDI. But they went to a lot of effort to max it out. No heat/ac/lights/fans/etc. Everything was off, windows up. Really makes me want to import one.

I have gotten 800 miles on one tank in My Passat, I generally get 700-750 though, I don't hypermile.

The 800 mile tank was a fishing trip to Canada with 3 guys and all our gear, went from my house, to my folks' to canada, to my folks, to my house, all on one tank.

Twice that is absolutely amazing. It would be fun to see what it would do without all the emissions junk on there!

I have my doubts on it. Like most chain e-mails.

But why wouldnt the US EPA making it more "emission friendly" (read regulators,filters,blahblahwhatever) not kill the MPG?

B4 Passat Wagons could easily hit over 1,000 miles with every tank and 'regular' driving. My B4 sedan would pull down over 800 pretty consistently when vented, and I definitely don't hypermile.
