Default 1999 Spec Miata - Wisconsin

I know this is a bit out of place on here, but you never know!

This turn key race car was just built from a clean southern 1999 Mazda Miata donor with 90K on the odometer, and has less than two hours run time since completion. The motor pulls hard and the transmission shifts effortlessly. Full legal Spec Miata trim minus restrictor and ballast, it's almost too clean to race!

The chassis was stripped bare down to the subframes and professionally painted metallic silver with the exterior and cockpit receiving a healthy layer of clear coat - show car quality. No accidents, no rust, and a perfectly straight frame. This race car is being sold for off road racing use only.

TONS of new parts were just put into this car, to list a few:

While I don't know that this would sell on this site, I can guarantee there are plenty of people that will have the exact same reaction as I just did: Holy shit, that's awesome.

    Good luck with your sale!

Out of pure curiosity, how hard would it be to register that?

Thanks! Under normal circumstances you would be able to title one of these no problem, assuming you don't have emissions or inspection. To pass emissions you would have to put the stock exhaust back on to run a cat. This particular car cannot be registered however.

It's approximately 2170lbs with no driver or ballast if my memory serves correctly. Spec race weight is 2400 for the 99s for reference, so most guys have to run additional ballast.

do u have the proper restrictor plate?
    which differential does it have?
which spring hats does it have?

very nice build, but $20k usually buys you car that has several podium finishes...

$20K may buy you a 1-2 season old podium finisher, yes. I am well aware of the market, this is within the range for a pro built turn key racer. As stated in the ad it needs restrictor and ballast to be fully SM legal. A restrictor can be provided if the buyer so desires. It's a 99, so it has 99 top hats (with the FC bushings of course). I'm trying to source a Torsen so if the car sold this very second it would have an open differential. Shoot me an email if you have any further questions.

Just curious, but what keeps this from being a road legal car?

This particular car can never be road legal since it can't be titled due to a dishonest seller who never sent the title for the vehicle. Buyer gets full contact information for the SOB, I could take him to court but its not worth my time considering he lives in Rochester MN and I live near the WI/IL border. For race cars titles don't really mean much, I would guess 80% of the race cars that are built or brokered through my work don't have titles. Every once in a while you see someone who wants to drive one of these to and from the track, but that usually only lasts until the first wreck (which is usually the first race) when they have to drive a twisted car home on the street with the body panels ripped off.

But IF this car hypothetically had a title, it would be fully road legal ignoring the fact that it has no catalytic converter.

I'm pretty used to people who have never done something lending me their "free advice" about that same something that I have been doing successfully for a while. That may not be the case here, but if it is, it 'aint no thang.

So technically he could come out with the title and say you stole the car and it would then have to be returned to him? Technically the car is still his...

Personally I won't have a race car that I can't title....I like to carry insurance on it when it is in storage, when it is on the trailer, and I like to be able to SOME testing on public roads, and hate spending time to load/unload the trailer just to get it to say the alignment shop.

In this case I would just buy a parts car, scrap it out and register that VIN....oh wait, I didn't say that. but seriously....since one can't legally drive a car even around the block w/o insurance, it is good to have it titled/insured.

Part of what i do (PALMER) is ask leading questions for not only my benifet but the benifit of the entire audience. ONCE I sell my SCCA ITA/NASA PTE Neon I will be looking for another race car, most likely a SM. I haven't paid much attention to the SM cars over the $15k mark; but my noob-ness to the SM world would have thought, for this price it would have been equiped w/ the optimum diff, and been a rebuilt motor/freshened up head.

Does it have the retro-fit hard-top latch bolt thingies? Fuel test port?

Apex, you sound like you know what you are doing, why not put up your website, or something that shows the public you are not just another hack (like me) working out of a suburban 2-car garage, learning on the fly. You also should post the car on scca-lol.org, nasaforums.com, and sccaforums.com ACTUALLY you should compete in the SCCA race at BIR over memorial day, w/ a For Sale sign in the window.

Or maybe "THIS CAR IS FOR SALE" in big vinyl letters on the side of the car.

ooo and on the back you can put "Buy this car and next time you wont be behind it"

All but one of my friends who runs insurance on their race cars don't have titles or registration. Theres decent insurance plans out there that cover everything except when you are actually on track. Damage during transport, paddock, parking lot, whatever. Testing your race car on public roads is something I do not recommend at all. Think about it, how much can you really test without driving the car to its limits. Thats what test days and lap days are for, with exceptions of course. If you ARE going to drive a race car on public roads give your local PD a call and explain to them what you would like to do - my boss did this and surprisingly the local LEOs gave us the go ahead to drive cars to the local track on weekends where we simply have more cars than our trailers can haul.

Yes car has fixed hardtop brackets, its listed above in the parts list. The differential is something it needs to (and will) have, I just haven't found any 4.3 Torsens locally yet. Honestly, if someone is looking to spend $15K, and they want a pro motor, its not going to be anything new or remotely close to this. I can understand why you would think that, when I first got into supporting Spec Miatas proffesionally in '09 I was in awe at what these things go for new. Prior to that I had built a few SMs with friends but it was always a low budget build that wasn't even remotely competitive nationally. As a point of reference, with a $5000 pro motor, this car would be in high 20s. Add data and you're in the low 30s. You can get into SM cheap, but you will not be competitive. Also, if you are thinking about getting in to SM, you might want to go get acquainted with your local body shop. These guys are brutal.

I should clarify the origin of this car - this was built independently by me and a pro NASCAR fabricator, both of us having years experience doing builds like this professionally in our 9-5s. Its the car that we both wanted to build but never had the chance since building cars under our employers had to be done "their way". A good friend of ours wanted to get into Spec Miata so we built him this over the winter under the instruction "do it right, do it the way it should be built".By completion in spring he had already changed his mind and the car was for sale before it was even finished. I've had the privilege of dealing with cars from almost every major pro SM shop in the nation, seeing the strengths and weaknesses in every shops build. This is what you get when you take all the goods and none of the bads and cram them into one Miata.

The car is listed in a few places, I need to get it up on Mazda Racers. It will be attending various lap days until it sells, the owner would rather use this than his 911 lol.
