just out of curiosity but my girlfriend was wondering if there were any camp sites near by as an alternative to renting a hotel room.

There are, but I believe everything was booked up. Camping was one of the original ideas, but Holland is apparently a really popular tourist destination and the campground was booked up until something like 2014.

Grand haven state park is really nice for the wide open beach feel or hoffmaster state park further north is really nice too if you like a more wooded them but also only a 5-10 min trail walk to the beach. I've camped both places many times as a kid.

everywhere else was more expensive and all local camp sites were booked full.
