Default Postal CJ, nope not euro!

1970 Postal body on a pre-72 CJ5 frame. So left hand drive frame with a right hand drive postal body. Picked it up from Bessemer Michigan a week ago.

Missing motor (just picked up an AMC 360). It needs a rear drive shaft. Its got the offset to the right rear axle, just found out yesterday after looking that it was a dana 44! Twin stick of some sort transfer case, I'm assuming dana 18. And thats all I know so far.

Looking at 2.5" wide leaf conversion (wrangler leafs) with somewhere around 4" of lift. Going to run 33's and a rear locker. It currently has 36x14.5" tires. Will build a cage and box the frame this winter. Get the steering mounted up on the left and whatever else to make it drivable. Thats about it for now.

I checked it out yesterday really for the first time. It was rainy when picking it up and I dropped it off about 20 miles from my house at my dad's. I'm really happy with how solid the frame is on this! The body is in pretty decent shape too, plenty for a wheelin rig.

Need to figure out what tranny this is…

The gas tank will likely be cut into the floor and mounted on the triangulation here in the back. I'll put a piece of steel and weld it for a base

    yay d44!

So I'm quite happy after checking it out today. And excited to get it together and wheeling next year.

    Awesome.

My grandmother was a mailperson for most of her career. She owned her own postal Jeep for doing her rural postal route. Apparently you could buy the postal Jeeps through the Post Office if you worked for them.

My uncle is a retired rural mailman as well. He bought a right hand drive Subaru wagon through his post office.

Anyways, good luck with the project. As you may have seen, I am working on some old american iron myself.

I have! Quite awesome. I've got a soft spot for classics like those. It's just not the right time for me to have a project like that as I've still got my 2002 I'm working on. And I'm on a college budget.

Awesome project! I remember wanting to do a "postal Jeep rock crawler project" since reading about them in the Off Road magazine in High School! Keep us posted.

the frame looks like someone bed-lined it. nice find, if you need some inspiration to keep building check this guy's jeep out.

Just got this thing home today. I went to swap the wheels and didn't realize the driver side lugs were LEFT handed threads. Ugh. Will be ordering 10 new studs and lugs. I also just got done ordering wheel spacers so I don't need to go to a wider axle so quickly.

You need a bumper sticker saying "It's a Postal Thing"

90% sure I'm going to get a collector plate with Postal as the lettering. Real original I know, but I think it might be cool.
