Whats wrong w/ the engine style thats in there? are they anemic? I dont know anything about them.

Kris. The flathead 6 in this thing is 230 CID (3.8L), it is a cast iron boat anchor, and it's only 110 HP. The only reason I'd keep it is because most people don't.
That is why I am so willing to toss it for a V8.
right on. I think the first things guys do that ruins stuff like this is modernize them. but thats just me.

The V8 I have lined up is far from modern. 70's era, carb, and smokes a little.
Right up this trucks alley. lol
Here is an illustration as to why flathead engines are weak.
The vales are next to the cylinder and open up, plus they are VERY small. The combustion chamber is very flat and as it pressurizes the air fuel mixture you can probably imagine that you loose some of your power because the ignition happens over the valves as well as the piston.
Outdated design, but fun to see it in use sometimes.

Changed the oil today.
Cullen said he poured like a gallon of oil into the cylinders to make sure they stayed freed up. Well, when I drained out the oil 4 GALLONS came out. My 3 Gallon drain pan filled up before I could put the plug back in, then when I put it back under there it was nearly half filled up again. This engine holds 4.5 quarts and it had about 16 in it. lol
Holly crap. Good thing it didn't get started with that much oil in there or it would have blown that rear main seal clean off.
I couldn't for the life of me find an oil filter. It's not like there is not room to look in there. I couldn't see one anywhere. I guess it is possible there isn't one. I mean air-cooled VW's just have a screen.
So the oil is changed.
Then I made some new gaskets for the carb and reassembled that. I ran out of sunlight before I could put it back on the intake though. So Thursday I'll get out there and install it.
The battery cables are gonna be a bitch to change out. The cable brackets closest to the battery are REALLY hard to get to and corroded to hell. I'll probably just lop off the cables and run the new ones next to the old ones. No big whoop.
My goal is to be trying to start this thing on Saturday.

Don't bump this thread until it's running.
Oil filters were an option back in the days of the flattie. They were a popular aftermarket kit. There are some cool ones out there. It'll keep you busy at swap meets tracking one down.
That being said they don't actually filter much oil. That's why oil change intervals were 2,000-3,000 miles. (and why we can really get away with 10,000 mile oil changes now except that the industry makes more money convincing us it needs to be 3,000).
these old beaters are the best... definately a head turner!
