    Default sour diesel...(mk1 diesel coupe)

a few weeks ago i went to my buddy kevins and bought one of his barn treasures. its a 1982 jetta coupe 1.6L diesel. i plan on going for an oem+ look. i have a set of coils lined up. im also working on something for wheels. i have a lot of cleaning to do and a fair amount of engine work. it should be fun learning about these rod knocking beasts!!

    was...

    now...

    interior...

went up to kevins and dug into the diesel! started on the brakes. the fronts are totally done. the rears were a little more difficult... the passenger side broke free after a nice bath in pb blaster but the drivers side is still resisting. ill prob be making a new one since it will most likely break. i attempted to hand crank the motor to see if it would even turn over and had no luck. robert and i removed the intake and discovered that the intake valves are rusted in place. its currently soaking in seafoam. hopefully that will break it loose. if not i will be removing the head and going through it. iv decided to remove the ac(something i wasnt originally going to do) it will just be better for everything... plus the alternator situation will be handled much easier. well thats all for now. i did snap a few pics...

    hover car...

the underbody, its pretty clean all around.

    most recent...
driving over an hr every time i wanted to work on my car wasnt working out for me so i decided to drag it home to my garage.
    new home...

after digging into the engine more i realized that the reason that it wouldnt budge it because cylinder 1 was totally rusted in place. so i contacted the guy i purchased it from and he hooked me up w/a un-seized 1.6. i still need to get all the gaskets and belts to put the setup together. i should have everything back up and running hopefully in 2-3 weeks. i need to start working on getting the bonded title process rolling. when i went to pick it up there was like 6" of water on the floor. the small flap window apparently doesnt seal all the way, but ill be fixing that soon.

    anyhow on to the pics...
    beginning the healing

minty fresh looking head w/206k on it...

pulled the head to see a shit block...

    new 1.6 complete w/trans...

i also pushed in the bumpers...

after i removed the seats i had to re-arrange the drying system...

    the workspace...

    today...
i tore down the new motor to see the condition of the block and i was happy. its butter smooth but filthy.

better pics of the interior, its needs a good cleaning yet but everything is in great condition spare the missing dash bit(which id love to buy from anyone who may have mk1 jetta dash bits)

It's like Freja's interior but with cloth seats

Looking like a solid project so far!

Noohing major, at least not right now. Coils, wheels, and exhaust for sure once it runs. I think in the next few yrs a mk4 tdi swap will happen.

    that'd be ballin,
i'd look for a mk3 tdi (AHU) since the mounts will line up but mk4 TDI's are a lot easier to come by

Looks like a lot of vw's at that shop!

2nd on the interior being awesome.

My friend and I know of a guy with an 86 (iirc) GTI. Its not in this good of shape, but only has one spot of rust... makes me want to go pick it up and tear into it.

That coupe is actually exactly the same as mine, same story of how it was found too. I didn't make it to EW this yr but I have chatted w/him quite a bit on the vortex. Im pretty sure he will be at dubs in the valley this yr seeing as his is from wis. I look forward to seeing my cars twin.

Those are only the cars that are up near the shop... He has 4 barns full of mk1's, dashers, quantums, a few aircooled's, and some mk2's. He has a single cab and 21 window bus as well. It's pretty sweet. Most of them are rotting but there are a few gems left, like mine.

If you have the time and $$ I say go for that mk2. Parts are so damn cheap and it's really easy to make them quick and fun. My mk2 dd has less than $300 invested in it total and it's a freaking blast to drive, it will e even better when the motor is done and it's faster

Hell yea! My mk2 was free also!! That's the best possible deal. Even after a cammed aba w/a close ratio trans swapped into the golf I will still be under $800 total investment
