Default Goodbye to the BMW inline 6?

    240hp turbo 4 cylinder....

I imagine the inline 6 is about to be retired, or at least scaled back...

They'll keep the six for sure, they just want to introduce a 4 cyl for all markets. To bump up milage for the US market, and have a sportier 4 cyl for other world markets.

why run the NA 6 at all when this makes better power, and better fuel economy with less weight?

But what are the low end torque numbers? I suppose with variable timing they can overcome a lot...

    I know nothing about 4-bangers....

That's been around for quite some time in other markets along with the 4cyl. diesel in the 1 Series. Before that, they offered 4cyl. engines in several older cars.

I imagine the torque is in the 260-280 range.

The first four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology offers a substantial power upgrade as well as a significant efficiency improvement; rated power: 180 kW/245 hp, rated torque: 350 Newton meters.

That makes a lot of sense to you and I, but I doubt weight is a concern to BMW. The engineers, perhaps, but if it were up to them, a 1-series wouldn't weigh SIX HUNDRED POUNDS more than an e30. New cars are garbage.

BMWs are already low on the reliability list. I hope more turbo engines don't sink them down further.

I drove a 320d in Italy and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Agree. Everyone bitches about weight gain on new cars but add up all the safety & emissions gear, the navigation, stereo, heated seats, etc and that's a big chunk of your 600 pounds.
