    Default MN Unemployment Insurance question

For you guys getting unemployment, how long does it generally take to get your $ after requesting a payment? This is the first time I've ever done this and the website doesn't really do a good job of explaining stuff like this.

Yeah, I got a severance. I take it that it's gonna effect the amount of $ I get.

you don't get paid for the first full week off, but you request it after that one, and then I got paid the following wednesday after my second request for them to pay me. So about 2 1/2 weeks for the first one. If I request on a monday I get it on wednesday.

however, for some people it can take a month or so before the first payment

Correct. Register for Unemployment ASAP since it takes a while for you to get setup in the system. They will ask you about severance and your payouts will be calculated for you so you know how much to expect and when.

^^ Yeah, I figured I should get on the ball. I've been laid off since Jan 1, but applied last Friday. They did ask about my severance when I applied. I also did the direct deposit thing, as I figured that'd be quicker than mailing a check.

Just make sure you follow the instructions. Forget to call in and it will cause you headaches.

Its 2 weeks before they can issue your first payment. But call them ASAP after you fill out the web stuff it gets it going faster.

Maybe it's changed (I was laid off from a job about 4 years ago and got unenjoyment bennies for about 6 weeks) but I seem to remember calling in to an automated menu to confirm employment status on a weekly basis.

^^ I think it may have changed. It says that you need to request payments weekly via the website. I didn't see a phone # anywhere...hope I didn't miss something....

Wouldn't surprise me they changed it to a web based thingy. The phone lines were constantly busy back then.
