Listen twice as much as you talk.
I really should be much more worried about insurance than I am. for now its just cash on the side. I would eventually like to turn it into a real shop. I hope I dont learn the hard way why insurance is needed. I have to talked to many shop owners and they all said they started with side jobs in their garage.
Sounds like a great start so far.
IDK what your name is, but for sake of example, I'll pretend it's Mike Smith. Kind of a generic name. What kind of image are you going for? Small customer oriented shop, or larger, money oriented? I know that, obviously, your a one man operation, but the person looking for work doesn't know that. You could have 5 technicians working for you for all they know.
Does the idea of a small shop sound appealing to you? If you named it something like M.S. Automotive, Mike's Autowerks, Smith Autowerks, etc. It would be a little more personal.
MasterTech Autowerks sounds like a great name, however, it seems like the name of a professional shop where larger accounts would get priority over Joe Shmo and his 96' Grand Am. The customer doesn't know where you are doing the work, either. It could be your garage or a dedicated shop that you own and operate.
This is just me being critical. And by all means don't change the name if you've got it set on MasterTech Autowerks, because it really is a good name. And maybe you are going for a more professional approach. But if it were me, I would be the kind of person to open a small shop that you would get the same people to come back for years with their cars. People that would know you by name and trust your work.
-------
I'll play my own Devil's advocate. A small shop doesn't always mean good quality work. A larger shop has to stand behind their work as they don't want a bad rep. And people think that more professional = better work. So it's really all the kind of image you want to have.
So, yeah, just my nit picking.
So Topher made me a fantastic ad for me to put on craigslist I did add a bunch of stuff to the ad. People always comment how impressed they are about my ad. I recently ran across someone elses ad as I was searching for vw's. They copy and pasted parts of my ad. I emailed the guy and very respectfully told him to please take parts of my ad out of his. he wrote back short and sweet " Free country deutsche bag, adds are not the same, get a life".
anyways heres a link to his ad http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hn...352703299.html

Nice job Topher. Ad looks really good.
Looks like the other guy has an integrity issue.
If you're not confused, you're not paying attention.
Bummer about the guy pretty much lifting your ad. But hopefully it won't effect your business. Also, in the top graphic you list your labor as $45/hr but in the main portion of the write up it says $35.
And you lost some punctuation and have some randomly capitalized words... but hey. Glad it's working out.
Maybe, I will have you do my front brakes.
I'm no HTML pro, but can I toss some HTML code at you post? I find it kind of hard to read off of craigs in just font.
Just things like switching to bullets and possible making the search words on the bottom smaller will help.
I'm also a visual guy and a picture of your shop or even a picture of you happily working on a car would go a long way for me.
Also the difference in shop rate has to go ASAP.
looks like it dissapeared
