I was looking at cable kits for putting a battery in my trunk, and the negative wire is only 3 ft long. Why is that so much shorter? I really have no idea what the black cable does anyways.. Please school me..

The black cable is just the ground, since the entire car frame is grounded you can connect it anywhere there is a solid clean connection.

E30s have trunk mounted batteries.if your application is a smaller car, it is nice 0 gauge cable, and cheaper than a kit at the junkyard.
I'm assuming you're relocating the battery in your G60?
If you're looking for some pointers, I did this in my Corrado a few years back. I pieced it all togther from various sources.

Back in the day, I paid about $100 for the Optima battery tray. They're a little more now.
