    Default Plastidip my car

I am thinking about Plastidipping the hood of my Boxster which i am planning on driving this winter.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNY9Dx617N8

Anyone ever tried it? Am I nuts?

I think i am just going to do the hood to protect it from rock chips. But in Blaze orange or neon green for a little style.

I love the idea that its removable and looks pretty noob friendly unlike paint or wrap.

    What do y'all think?

I plasti-dipped my roof, and it was a pain in the ass to remove. I may have applied it incorrectly or it got sun baked, either way, it wasn’t worth it.

I helped plastidip my buddies entire Blobeye WRX for the winter (a few years ago) As long as you thoroughly clean the outside of the car and keep it perfectly dry before painting, it will peel off just fine after winter.

tips throughout the winter if you do this:
wash your car at least once a month if not a few more
make sure to apply enough at the start, if you add more later it won't stick with the road salt adhered to the outside.
don't sand anything, roughness with cause it to stick and peel off in little bits (similar to what Das VR6 was talking about)

yeah I dont think I applied enough on the first coat, did 6-7 light coats, didn’t sand anything?

are you saying to just bomb the first layer on?

no, layer it like you would normal paint but we applied around 12 coats to his to make it basically a solid chunk of rubber on his car (it wasn't pretty i'll be honest)

I have 10 cans of gunmetal if you are interested. Otherwise I know a guy who does it 'professionally' with a spray gun. I believe he charges $650 but it looks 10000 times better than rattle canning it.

Every one i've taked to says rattle cans work for wheels or emblems but to do a body panel you have to have the sprayer. Rattle canning a large surface looks like crap. (Just like paint I suppose.) And to lay on at least 6 coats to get a good build up for removal.

They sell a kit now that includes a spray gun and a gallon of plastidip plus precleaner and even the blue tape for $150. Enough to do a hood. The 3 gallon full car kit is $250. Plus I then own the sprayer so can do it for track days or next winter or because I am bored.

I was doing this for rock chip protection as much as anything else. I mean with the road salt a grime my car looks like shit most of the winter anyways.

I think I'll give it a shot. If I don't like it I can remove it - which is the point right?

even if you thoroughly clean the paint and keep it dry there is always a chance that it will take some paint off when you peal off the dip.

i am planning on dipping all of my BMW this winter since the paint is already pretty horrible and i don't care but if you are concerned about it then i would hold off on dipping the hood. Also from what i have read it is a much better idea to do body panels with a gun since the spray pattern is going to much wider than a can and will make for much more even coverage which will make it easier to peal off in the end.

i'll be writing up a nice big post about it when i do the bmw

    LOLWUT?

Maybe on a shitty paintjob with total disregard for prep, sure.

this is the story i was referring to. http://g35nyc.com/forums/showthread....What-not-to-do

i have no idea what the condition of the car was before hand but i felt it was appropriate to inform the OP that there was a risk involved

I can't wait to see this trend sail off into the sunset.
