Default Magnetic Ring inside the Differential case, B5 A4

    Hey everyone,

Some of you know I recently had my clutch replaced with a new Sachs clutch. After I got the car back from the shop and repair, the spedometer stopped working. The shop initially thought it was the speed sensor. So I got a new one put in. Still no spedometer. Then they thought it was the cluster. So I got a new one, put it in. Still no spedometer. Then, they thought it was the wiring without a doubt. Had the wiring checked through and new wiring put in. Still no spedometer. Now, as of Friday... they think it is the magnetic ring inside my differential. They believe this ring is either broken or out of place in the tranny. So, they want to have it in the shop for this repair. I have it scheduled for this Thursday/Friday.

The shop told me to poke around on forums and see if anyone might have this ring/part in their posession that they would sell to me, or maybe someone knows where I can get one?

Here is a great write up I found on what the next hopeful solution for my spedometer problem is and a few great shots of the magnetic ring I need.

    Thanks Fellas

    NVM...

Sorry. close this one. I just ordered the part from ECS Tuning for $19. If it doesn't need to be replaced, i'll just return the part. Hopefully ECS sends me the right part this time!! Last time I got hub rings from them, they sent me the wrong part.

Sounds like you need to find a new shop.

Well, the shop that did the clutch, then was certain it was the speed sensor was JM Auto. I'm not hesitant to tell everyone here DO NOT go there for service.

From that point on, I stopped going there and have only been going to SVS, which is a shop I trust in Duluth. I can only bring the car in Fridays, because I drive for work and work Monday through Thursday. So, it's been a few weeks of no speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge or cruise. SVS said it was the cluster. So I bought a working S4 cluster and had them install it. Same problem, different cluster. Then they thought it was the wiring. I went in for my scheduled appointment at 10:30 am on this last Friday... They didn't start working on my car till 1:45PM. I didn't get out of there till 5:00PM. And, with the wiring fixed... Still the same problem. They charged me for one hour of labor for this instance.

Now SVS says it is this magnetic ring. This entire time, I am the only one who believes JM caused whatever is going on here. Everyone else tells me it is coincidental. THAT is just too hard for me to believe. Everything worked great when I dropped it off, when I picked it up, there were 8 problems. Exhaust leaks, scuff in my bumper, gauge cluster issues, and others. JM puts their hands up and says we're innocent and won't pay for any of the repairs. The most they said they will do is give me $100 check if I sign something saying they're not liable anymore. Bullshit red flag there.

SVS has a good reputation with the euro guys up here and they've done a lot of work for me. Fridays lack of timeliness is a problem. It's happened before at SVS too.

The only other choice up here is $$$ foreign affairs $$$ which they are known to be very expensive.

Ugh. I just want my car back the way it was before I got the clutch done.

    Sorry for the rant.

I like SVS. Guys at FA are nice too, though.

Yeah, if this magnetic ring doesn't work, I'll try FA.

Magnetic ring installed, annnd the speedometer still does not work.

They said they want to completely redo the wire from the speed sensor to the cluster. So far what has not worked; new cluster, new speed sensor, new magnetic ring, and they said they checked the wiring.
