Since gas topped $4 a gallon in the U.S., consumers have been flocking to small cars in record numbers. The dramatic shift caught many automakers off guard, with most scrambling to ramp up their small car efforts in the U.S. Volkswagen was one such automaker that was caught without a true small car, but the German automaker is reportedly considering bringing a version of its Polo to the U.S.
The Polo would go head-to-head with vehicles like the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit, and would offer U.S. buyers another high-mileage alternative. The Yaris and Fit both average about 31-32 mpg in combined driving, a figure the Polo would meet or exceed.
“We are considering bringing these cars here,” Stefan Jacoby, CEO of VW, told Bloomberg. “It’s too early to give a timeline for when.”
It remains unclear where the U.S.-spec Polos would be built, although VW’s Mexican production facility would be the presumed front-runner, with the recently announced Tennessee plant being another possibility.
In another bit of VW news, Jacoby confirmed that a U.S.-built Passat replacement would bow in 2011, although the new mid-size sedan will not carry the Passat nameplate.

Caught off guard? Honda and Toyota brought these car here last year C'mon VW, get on the ball. I like how they refuse to bring a tried and true platform here, yet they did bring a $80K land yacht. (Pheaton)

Yeah I know seriously I should be working for VW AG cuz really they need a regular persons opinion on this stuff not some tightwad germans attitude about something they dont know schiBe about. Also I forgot about that stupid phaeton thing is it really coming back or was that a brilliant idea they had but now that gas is expensive are they still gonna do it?

I think BBS RSs would look at home on the Polo.
And yeah I'd rock one. At least the GTI one.

What I can't believe is that 31-32 is considered a "high mileage car"
With the stock engine in my 92 civic I couldn't get lower than 35mpg and I could get over 40 if I was doing mainly freeway driving.
And not to mention that up untill about 2000 honda had a couple different gas engined cars that would get between 40 and 50mpg, one even had a CVT transmission as an option.
And now they consider 31-32mpg as good?
I don't understand what is going on
but with regards to the Polo, yes they should bring it over. But I hear that margins are pretty thin right now for euro cars being sold in the US. There are even europeans that are buying cars from the US and shipping them back because of how weak our dollar is right now and that is hurting the european manufacturers. So I could see them not bringing it here if they determine that they wouldn't make any money on it.

Well they are gonna have to build or bring a small car here cuz really every single other car company is selling smaller and cheaper cars than volkswagen ironically.

According to Automotive News, Volkswagen has determined that Americans might like a Polo, so it's bringing the 80-hp subcompact Stateside in the not-too-distant future. Until now, the importation of the Polo was all conjecture (http://www.autoblog.com/2008/01/15/coming-to-america-vw-polo-may-come-stateside/), but now we have confirmation, straight from the horse's mouth. No specifics were given about the diminutive hatchback's U.S. debut, but Volkswagen Group of America CEO Stefan Jacoby confirmed they think the time is right. The automaker feels that Americans are more open to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles following the summer of high gas prices and the struggling economy.

Yeah I saw this and decided Im not gonna even care until its on a boat in the middle of the atlantic. Volkswagen needs to get some balls and send some damn products here if they think we need it or not. Its not like they wont sell. VW has been outdone in almost everyway and need to get their shit back in gear.

I don't understand what is going on.
New cars are fat. End of story. Everyone wants hp, government demands 300 airbags per car, cars are now designed to pass insurance crash tests with flying colors, everyone wants big wheels, heated seats, nav, 6-disc changers in their cars and it all adds up. Check the weight of your old Civic vs a new Civic, same goes for the Golf. New Golf's are almost a half ton more than a MkII. A half ton. That's a lot.

^Haha
So hopefully we'll actually see some small motors in it considering the point is fuel economy. No doubt they'll take 90% of the Manuals away since our country is seemingly incompetent when it comes to driving a stick...

Beautiful.
They'll give us DSG and call it good. Not that there is anything wrong with DSG

Fine for the higher end trim but the other half of the awesomeness of small gas misers is CHEAP! as in they start at half the price of the base Golf over there, so hopefully that will leave the manual intact. I can't see the DSG as being a super cheap unit. I know what they'll end up doing, they'll bring them over with motors, options, and prices, similar to the Yaris and Fit. Now what they should do is amaze everyone already by releasing a superior car with a tiny Diesel with mileage and pricing that will blow the other "sub-compacts" out of the water. Grr.

I've always read about it coming here with 1.4 TFSI. With a chip it'll make stock mkV GTI power in a small car. So much win a little car. And a diesel option would round out VW's diesel push.
And I doubt they'd bring it as a GTI. I'm sure they think it'd confuse the American buyer. There already going to have to deal with "competition" between the GTI and the Scirocco.

GLI Ryan and I were just at Schmelz on Tuesday and according to the salesperson we were talking to, we will be seeing the Scirocco stateside fairly soon. I don't know if this is new news or not, but it was to me.

The Scirocco announcement took place some time ago. As far as I know it's only going to be available with the 2.0 TSI motor.
