All bushings are or will be replaced for poly ones.
Those yellow ones are Poly Sport's, mainly meant for road use :)
hey look, the carrier is part of the spindle. i have those, and we can't use bigger rotors...bummer.
what modification to the coilover was done? moved the mounting points up?
The carrier is detachable. You can probably use bigger rotors, but you'll need an adapter bracket to fit another carrier.
DMV in norway will not approve such modifications.
No real modification was made to the coilover. I just removed the helper spring and bumpstop. (DMV probably won't approve of that either  )

ekkoj
04-30-2008, 08:24 AM
what can you do and cant you do? you can modify the entire suspension but not the carrier? odd.
Kinda hard to explain, but I can change the engine, but only if a dealership can provide enough information lot's of stuff. (Which they are reluctant to do)
I can swap the suspention if I have a certificate that says it's legal for the car ( ie TÜV approval)
I can't modify the new suspention parts, I can't wind it all the way down,
I can run with adapters for the carriers if I can certify that teh metal in the adapters are strong enough, DMV can't tell me how strong they need to be or where to get a certificate.
I can have tinted windows, but not on the front windows, however, if they are tinted from the manufactuerer i can have them tinted all the way forward.
I can't run with the adapters for the Porschewheels unless I can certify they are strong enough...
Get it?
Makes sense?
No, sure doesn't...
So, here's the drill; for the most part, we change whatever we want to do, run with it untill the police stops us and gives us a notice to go to the DMV to check the car. Then we change stuff back to how it was when the car left the factory and go to the DMV. After car is approved by the DMV (because everything is now stock) we change everything back to how we want it to be...
Then we repeat untill we get tired or start another project...

Damn. Is all that with a hefty fine? Or is it just a "hey... go get that checked".
Depends on the cop, but for the most they just issue a paper that says you have to go to the DMV.
That beeing said, many cops are ok also. When I got stopped with Rostfrei they just wondered if the rear wheels were a bit on the wide side and sent me on my way. Had to promise to go straight home though :p

Got some hours in today as well. Nitewlker came over and sorted out the wireing for the rear lights. As I'm using a 83 harness some work is needed to make it work.
Another problem when using the harness from the 83 is that the holes for the engine and front light wires in the firewall are to small.

Anyway. Managed to get the instrument cluster in. Had to rewire from the 83 loom to the 80 dash, but I think I got it right. Also ran new wires for oil and water temp. I know they look a little out of place, but I had them lying around and figured I could use them. Thought I had a gauge for oil preassure as well, but it turned out to be another temprature gauge

Allthough I hate doing wires more than anything else, I just can't live with this.
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_605.sized.jpg
So I'm redoing all the wires for the front lights. I'm doing them with power directely from the battery and will just use the old ones as signals for relays. This should give me a bit more juice to the front lights. Good for the norwegian autumn and winter ;)

Look, here's the thing.
There is a big show in Sweden 6-8 June. Now, I'm driving together with Bugbabe from Southampton. But I've promised a friend of mine he can use my car to get to the show.
Here is the to do list:
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau1558.sized.jpg
As you can see, there's quite a bit on the list, so I'm a bit short on time, but I think I'll make it :)
I've sorted out the new loom for the headlights and such. Today I bent new fuel lines and got them hooked up to the fuel pump.
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau1567.sized.jpg
Reason for not looking to satisfied was that the fittings on the fuel lines were a real PITA to hook up to the pump.
Ida/bugbabe even helped out today polishing the last 928 rim. I was delighted as I had postponed that task for ages since it's so boring :p
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau1556.sized.jpg
The result was great, and I now have 4 polished 928's
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau1573.sized.jpg
(for comparison, they look like this before they are sanded down from 180 girth all the way up to 2000 girth)
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/album361/g60_083.sized.jpg

Also started to fit my oil-cooler. Now, the 16 v has a water-cooled solution as factory, I'm going to run without expansion tank for the radiator, so I figured I could use better cooling for the oil. Got a oil-filter bracket of one of the old 1,5 engines that I've accumulated over the years.
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_628.sized.jpg
Gave it a quick refurb
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_632.sized.jpg
I then attatched a Sandwich-plate allowing me to connect a Mocal Oil Cooler
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_635.sized.jpg
I'm not completely satisfied with the placement of the cooler, but it was the best I could do with the oil lines suplied with the cooler
Need to get it a bit higher I think.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, been kinda busy in the garage.
I was working on the car the other night and suddenly found myself laughing. I was exhausted at the time and it really wasn't that funny, but it struck me how versatile one has to be when piecing together a build like this. One moment I was using a precision tool like this.
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_669.sized.jpg
and then the other a "precision" tool like this
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_665.sized.jpg
:P
Anyways, I've done a whole bunch of things on the car. Frustratingly enough, it doesn't show that well at this stage of the build, but here are some highlights.
Finally decided on the placement for the oil cooler and got it bolted down.
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_662.sized.jpg
Got the radiator in. Painted the fan cover and cleaned the rest of it.
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_663.sized.jpg
As pictured above I hacked the air filter box from the Mk2 to pieces in order to make it fit on the passenger side frame rail. Got the rest cleaned and hooked up the fuel lines.
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_683.sized.jpg
Now, this might not look pretty, but I'm in a bit of a rush now, and seeing how the carpet in the trunk covers it, it'll do for now.
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_679.sized.jpg
I've also run most of the water hoses, started hooking up the engine harness, attached sway bars, gotten the rear bench in (again), sorted out the drive shafts, completed the gear linkage and lots of other stuff.
So this is how it looks as of tonight. (With brand new chrome inserts in the window seals ;) )
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_691.sized.jpg
And the list is for the most part done...
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/Blau_692.sized.jpg
Just need to get it running now ;)

Thank you guys! Sorry for the lack of updates lately, a lot has happened, but I've been a bit fed up with the car. But here's a quick summary
Through the help from good friends, I had the car ready for Bug Run at Mantorp in Sweden second weekend of June.
As I flew to the UK to drive my GF's cabby home together with her, I let a friend of mine drive the car to Bug Run. It made it there without any problems at all.
Out trip from the UK was 1800 km and took us 26 hrs including two ferry-rides and a couple of stops to get a snack and a bit of shuteye. The 1982 cabby treated us well, and did not have a single breakdown of any sorts :)
Allthough we arrived late saturday evening, we had a blast at Bug Run, but when sunday came around and the show was to start, 1980 decided to cause some trouble... It was hard to start and wasn't running as it should :banghead:
But beeing a bit tired from the long drive and the party the night before, I decided to enjoy the show and worry about the car later on. So, when time came to leave, I started looking into the car... Adjusted the timing without any luck, filled her up with gas to see if it was as simpe as that, got hold of a new fuel pump and swapped it lying on the tarmac at a local gas-station, but none of the above helped...
So, there I was, 500 km away from home with a car that wouldn't rev past 1100 rpms... Luckily I have a friend who lives about 1/3 of the way home, and a friend with a MK2 Vr6 offered to tow me there.
I left the car there and went to get it a week or so later with a trailer
As per now, I have swapped everything in connection with the fuel and ignitionsystem, and the car is running again... but not quite how it should. I suspect there is some isht in the fuel tank and have gotten hold of a new one. Should arrive sometime next week.
I might also add that I've sold the polished 928 rims, forcing me to finally finish polishing the BBS's

Also, a set of OEM bronze tinted ones are just waiting to replace the tinted windows. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.

i like the red one bestThanks :please: No.. seriously, the red one has twice the amount of money into it and all the body work has been done by a professional bodyshop. Also, the red one was built over two years where as mine where built in 3-4 months ;) That taken into consideration, I don't think mine is that bad at all :)
I have done some more work on the car, can you spot the difference?

Yes, the windows have been replaced for OEM brown tinted ones ;) I think the new windows and the RM's gave the car a much more classical look.
What you don't see is that I've also changed ALL the fuel supply parts including the tank to get the car to run properly again.
Other then that, I had to make some room in the garage for Ida's '59 bug which will finally get it's new engine in and hopefully make it's racing debute on Scandinavian Cal Look Classic this month. ( http://sccevent.com/ )
http://vagner.jeje.je/bilder/albums/Blau/20080731_Blau_830.sized.jpg
Also visit Ida and her Club's website at http://www.firefliesvwclub.com/ if you have the chance
As Ida has been around gathering missing parts for the '59, she came over some Bonrath Top mounts for the front suspension that will give me more suspension travel. They are going in today an I will also sort out the front alignment and some electrical issues.
