after having the equipment for a month and a half. i have figured out the oven and wrapped up some other projects, so when i get back from vegas on the 22nd of april, i will be ready to start taking on work. prices will be in the ballpark range of $100-$300 depending on your color choice, part size, etc...
The oven size is, 25"x27"x34" internal dimensions. As long as your part is smaller than that and metal, I can coat it.

blasting, prep and coating is included in that price.

please p.m. me with the details of what you want done.

on with the colors:

04-05-2008, 12:09 PM
Black chrome interests me as well, I'm going to do the centers of my rs' in it.

Ham, yes you can clear coat polished surfaces, because it is an electric charge between the part and powder, not just sticking to it like paint. You can powder coat chromed surfaces as well.

Is there a powder coat that can end up looking like a glossy silver paint?

So is that polished with clear PC over it? Then you tape that off and PC the center? I'm interested because I have a set that I'd like to do the same thing with.

poorscheg60

they're not coated yet and there brushed not polished. But that is the plan. or I could tape the lip, coat the center, then clear the whole thing.

A couple more things to mention....

1. I have seen the work that he did on Joel's car... top notch. And the way that Joel is building his car, he would not have had just any hack do it either. Dean did a very nice job.

2. Dean has stayed in constant communication with me throughout this process. Often without me asking for a progress report.

Big Ups, Dean!

Gun metal looks to be a 2 part proccess, transluscent silver over black. I will research more before confirming that though.

As for the oven, to buy one your looking at 5-15k, which I think is rediculous, so I built one to run off of propane.

The original plan was to build one from scratch because I work in a manufacturing plant, I make burner tubes, for fireplaces and the like all day so this is kind of right up my alley. The problem was it would cost over 1k for material at cost for the size I wanted.

So, I used an old clothes dryer shell that I fitted an external heating element with a fan that blows into the cabinet, so I get even heat distribution. It works really well actually, I still plan on building a big one later down the road if I can keep a steady flow of work going.
Eventually I want have one big enough to fit a motorcycle frame inside.

Pete, I think they look awesome in person. You will like them, I'm sure of it.

Palmer, it is black wrinkle, which is a matte-ish finish. And even is a good thing.

The camera flash kills the wrinkle, and makes it look kind of greyish.

As it stands it's not worth the monies to dismount and remount though :(

standard is a dull silver or black for ceramic work, however you can get any colored ceramic coatings done now i believe, so skys the limit there.

a coupe or rocco would kick ass, need to fix the tank on the festiva so ive got a good winter DD so i can put the bimmer in the garage and tear into her and see whats up for sure.

rockers are pretty ezmode to replace.

I'm looking to do a semi-gloss black with a white stripe on the outside. I don't know if this would be possible with powdercoating... any input?

poorscheg60
12-16-2008, 04:16 PM
I assume we're talking about wheels? A white stripe would be a bit difficult with powder. Would a white lip would work?

Gnomey
12-16-2008, 07:42 PM
Yes, they're wheels. The only issue with the lip would be that the wheel doesn't really have a lip. Which is why a stripe would make more sense. I might have to go paint route on this one... but I love powdercoating so much :sadwalk:

Dean you never got back to me after i picked up my wheels.

The powdercoat started chipping off within the first week and also realized that there were spots missing powder. I wanted it fixed, so i tried contacting you many ways. I called you numerous times, left voicemails, sent text messages, and then pm'd you a couple times. NO RESPONSE. Pretty tacky IMO. I can understand if you got shit going on or youre busy or whatever, but this was last august and i still havent even heard from you.

Doesnt matter now because i sold the wheels, but i still wanna know why i was ignored.

Drew, at that point in time I was without a phone, ask jack he had the last rm center cap available in the states sitting at bv for a couple months waiting for me. I wasn't around here. When I finally made it back into the scene you had already sold them. Lmk if and how I can make it right for you.

To counter Drews post... I have had wheels done by Dean as well.

I had the most positive expirience ever. The wheels turned out even better than I hoped and it was a great price.

What style and size are they? I media blast, prep and coat for typically $250-$300 depending on style, size, color, and # of colors.

Pretty much drop them off, then pick them up and pay when they're done.

Except the tires need to be removed by you.

Possible change of plan on the wheels. My mom had some 20's on her XC90 that she never took care of so they're beyond just a polishing. I would deliver them fully sanded and cleaned. They are similar to these, but less of a lip and no faux 2-piece hardware:

I'm throwing in the towel, at least until I move. I have to finish the two sets that I'm working on, I won't be taking any more work until further notice.

My air compressor broke. It will only make ~50 psi, which isn't enough to run my blaster. Plus, it provides considerably more stress than I need at this time.

DAMN! I was just going to ask you if you could re-finish 4 enkei 17" wheels and powder coat them charcoal or black for me!

Oh well, guess I'll have to do the work myself again. I think I'm going to invest in a power sander this time...

If anyone needs power coating in the interim, I used a place in Farmington that only charged $50/wheel and did a great job. PM me for info. They do mainly commercial stuff, but they have good cash prices for small odd jobs.
