What's up guys? Even though I've lurked on here for a while I guess I never formally introduced myself. My name's Ian, and I have met a few of the people on here before at various events, Uni, and on other local boards. Figured I may as well post up an official introduction.
When I'm not terrorizing the streets and backing into brick walls in my ultra super badass mid-80's Buick winter beater, I drive a 1998 white Jetta GLX. Bought it a few years ago with 48K on the clock from a dude in Hudson (Garrett for the East siders that know him) who bought it with the intention of making it a project car but never really got around to it. He had upgraded the tranny with a heavy duty SPEC clutch and a super lightweight flywheel, but the rest of the car was basically stock. Here's a pic of her it the early state:

Knowing I couldn't keep it stock, I lowered it a bit with a Weitec 60/40 kit, swapped on some Montes from a mkIV wrapped in Toyo TIR rubber, and did the typical GIAC chip/Magnaflow catback combo (already had an aftermarket intake) along with a few minor body mods. I pretty much called it a day for a while and debated whether it was worth it or not to drop any more money on a decade-old car.
Eventually I said screw it and went ahead and boosted the engine. My buddy and I installed the stage 1 Kinetic turbo kit a couple summers ago, and haven't looked back. Once it gets nice out after I finish ordering parts I'll be putting together a FMIC setup and will be upping the boost a bit. It currently heatsoaks like a bitch so it will be nice to get the incoming air temps under control a bit.
An old pic but is pretty much as she sits now, minus the rack:

So that's about it. Really looking forward to the roads clearing up a bit so I can start rolling around again. I always wave to any modded euros I see on the road (although there is a surprising lack of them in uptown), so if you see me give a honk or a wave.

How much power/torque can a person expect out of a boosted VR setup like that?
The Stage 1 kit, running 6lbs unintercooled, is usually good for 210-220whp or with similar tq numbers on premium pump gas on the T3/T4 hybrid turbo. The manufacturer claims a customer hit 240whp on 94 oct running 3" exhaust, although from reading real-word accounts that seems to be a bit optimistic. I am still running their 2.5" downpipe, which hurts flow, (wasn't aware that their $300 3" downpipe was available for an extra $80 when ordering) but running 3" all the way back after that.
Running the next stage, which is usually 9-10lbs of boost intercooled, throws down around the 275-300 whp/tq mark. That is about the limit of the 30lb injectors, plus the fact that you are still on stock compression (10.0:1 IIRC). Some people run water/meth setups with solid results pushing 13+lbs on stock compression but that's a risk I'm not willing to take.
From there, the next step is throwing on a 8.5:1 head spacer, 42# injectors, and a remapped ECU and the sky is the limit. A lot of people upgrade to a T04 at this point if they haven't already as a form of traction control. People grenade trannies at an unreal pace with the T3/T4 past 300whp since you're hitting full boost (16ish psi?) at 3K and snapping axles and shredding gears & synchros due to the sudden torque spike. At that point you NEED a LSD if you haven't already, and an upgraded 2nd/3rd gear and corresponding synchros is a good idea.
It gets expensive quick, and at the end of the day you are still driving a nose-heavy FWD car that is 10 years old. Point of diminishing returns and all that jazz. Personally I'll probably just ride out this next stage for a while, but I guess anything is possible.
nice! sounds like you havent dyno'ed it yet. planning to?

thats sick! ........white dubs! and how do you like that 60/40 kit?
hurray for VRT (I'm jealous) and welcome
Thanks Momo. I plan to throw it on the rollers after I toss on the FMIC and take care of some maintenance stuff (O2 sensor, new plugs, replace the rest of the motor mounts, throw a real oil catch can on, etc). Maybe get a dyno day down at RS or something this spring/summer? My buddy's been dying to throw his 996 on the dyno for a while now so it would be pretty fun to get an all-euro event going.
Mk3_Dubn, the Weitec kit holds up pretty well. Good compromise between stiffness and driveability for the price. Of course coils are preferred but I couldn't justify the cost, along with the headache of lowering & raising every fall/spring and dealing with seized coils. I appreciate slammed cars but considering how low VR oil pans are to begin with stock, this is about as low as I wanted to go since this was my daily until last fall.

Hey man, what's up? I definitely remember you from the trip. The ride out was pretty fun until Olson and I both split from the group to head into Milwaukee and we got stuck in stop-and-go traffic for an hour, burning oil everywhere. Worth it though for cheap fish fry and criminally low taps in Brewtown.
That ride back was crazy. Definitely one of the shittiest rain storms I've ever driven through, and I can't believe a couple cars in the group had shaved wipers and were depending on Rain-X. That was a sketchy-ass ride back. Even though I didn't really know you guys it was fun rolling out & back together, and that emergency Perkins trip was perfect.
See you around this summer hopefully.

lol, or Raffi with no Rain-X till halfway home :P

A bunch of Saab guys have been doing dyno days at RS at least once a year. I have had one of my cars dyno'd to death there, pretty much after each set of mods. I'm sure there would be enough intrest to do a Euro dyno day down there sometime soon. I have one car that I'm just wrapping up and need to get a baseline on, and I know of a few others who would like to get on the rollers sometime this year.

Oh, absolutely. I remember calling around to a few places last year when I was thinking of getting the ball rolling on a dyno day for a few buddies and I and a couple of the places only required a few (maybe 4-5?) cars to make it worth their while and give out a group rate. The biggest issue seems to be getting the word out and figuring out a Saturday that works for the majority of the group. Between the different VW, Audi, Saab, BMW and P-car boards it shouldn't be very difficult to get a solid lineup and good group rate.
I've always been happy with RS when we've had groups there. They do a good job of setting up and getting cars in and out in a timely manner.
From what I hear they are planning to re-arange the shop a bit so its even easier to setup getting cars on and off their dyno, no clue when that is planned to happen, but probably sooner than later. It should make it a bit easier for them to set up for dyno days and such. I'm sure there would be enough people interested in getting dyno'd to get a group together somtime this spring.
My understanding was they already did it
Really? Wow. I was down there what seems like only a few weeks ago. They must have gotten it done pretty snappy-like!
I could be wrong, it's always possible

Good God
Welcome! Amazing Jetta!
Thanks again guys. Seems like a good group in here.
JK9K, I've already started checking around and doing some preemptive legwork on getting an all-euro dyno day going sometime late April/early May at RS. Let me check around a bit more and I'll post a feeler thread shortly to see what kind of response there is between the different boards.
