View Full Version : Here come my mkV mods...

Well I\'m getting the itch that only mods can scratch so here goes my ideas and I want to hear some opinions.
1. Suspension. I\'m thinking coilovers. KW, H&R, etc...
2. If it were possible for me to make love to a wheel, my wheel of choice would be the 199\'s on the RS8. They look hot on the GTIzzle. They are not by any means a \"drivers\" wheel because I would prolly rock the biggest set I could get and they are heavy. But if I wanted to AutoX this beast then I\'d slap the 17\'s back on...
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e220/dkkong/288_Bild_040_1.jpg
3. I think im gonna get the euro cup holder and possibly the golf ball shift knob. I\'d love to get the heated asphirical mirrors too. Maybe I should just move to Europe for a while. That and I need to replace the front fascia which the dealer kindly drilled my allegiance to the state of minnesota into.
4. tint. where can I get some good tint?
5. Stainless brake lines, better fluid, better pads...

those wheels look so hot. I remember desiring those on my mkiv :) Very very nice!!! Can you tuck 20\'s in there!!!? :woohoo: :woohoo: 19\'s is probably more realistic :P
magilson

19\'s max. It would be sweet to roll on dubs in a dub. But i think the simultaneous irony would cause the implosion of the universe as we know it.

Well I ordered my coilovers. They should be here some time next week. I got KW V1\'s for $1166 at Euro Styles East with free shipping! Now I need to find some place to install them. If I can get access to a lift I can also take care of the \"rattle fix\" at the same time. Stupid Germans running fuel lines inside the frame

ordered my replacement axel bolts... Prolly should have thought of that earlier :( . Oh well. Now I kinda dont want to have my coilovers show up until monday since thats when the bolts get in. Maybe if they do Ill just re-use them and hope for the best until Monday. :;)

Actually I have been meaning to ask people who have been chipped about that very thing.
Lets say my goal is 300hp (to the wheels or the flywheel, whatever, just imagine). That goal is only achievable through a K04 or GT25 upgrade. If I get chipped now, say Revo (I\'ve read good things), and then down the road I start the new turbo project. Do I only purchase a new definition file (new program) or do I go through the whole $750 ordeal again?
I have to say, I really hope someone comes out with a way to self tune these engines. I can\'t believe no one has released a general public program to be tuned for the 1.8t, I mean I know some are working on it but It just mistyfies me. People always say, oh the tuner companies are smart and they take the time to get it right and they are engineers and all that. Damnit I\'m an engineer, let me do it. I want my car to be open source dagnabbit! I know I could do it for less than $750, thats for sure!

I\'ve been trying to get a open-motronic project together for years, but I can never find anyone that wants to work on it with me.
VW\'s checksums and chip encryption make it hard to just go in and change the maps, and the people who have \"cracked the code\" aren\'t talking.

magilson
06-13-2006, 06:52 PM
no because its not for sale in that size. That\'s pre-finished stuff, thats why its so cheap. Most of the rest of it is some retail store\'s overstock, when they cant sell it they send it back. That\'s also why the prices are so cheap for that. in the real world that stuff is about 3 to 4 times the price I have listed, so keep it on the DL.

Allright. So I\'ve become sufficiently annoyed with VW for making the rabbit\'s front end look a lot more VWish and painting all the lowers. At this point this is my plan for the future (probably distant):
OEMPLUS sells the \"blackout\" kit from the Euro GT model that makes the front end look amazing:
kit: http://vw.oempl.us/product_info.php?cPath=23_30&products_id=167&osCsi d=a08b3a187dc53991d61555ec46fe564c
what I\'d like to do with it:
http://www.pbase.com/euel/image/63085633.jpg
you can see the center is painted a \"titanium\" gray which I would probably try to emulate.
Then I\'d like to have my side skirts and rear bumper painted. With the rear bumper i wouldn\'t leave the \"indent\" which encases the lowest part of the bumper plastic because it\'s so near the already sooty exhaust. That and the Euro front lip would be nice, by then mine will probably be destroyed from learning to drive a lowered car, and it\'s not even that low!
DAMN YOU VW!

That\'s exactly my point, why is it so obvious to dubbers? I\'ve had this talk with so many people including Kris yesterday and it seems everyone agrees that the GTi front end just could have been better. I don\'t regret buying it at all, but let\'s just say it needs work.

FYI, taking apart a MkV center console is probably the most frustrating of all the interiors of any car I\'ve ever worked on, ever. It may be built that way so it won\'t rattle in 10 years, but good lord how many fastners does one dash need? No wonder the thing weighs 3100 pounds.

Euro cup holder in place. Man that was a lot of work. Especially with no moving air in the garage whatsoever. Well anyway I love the result. I put the Euro switch in too. At this point i\'m in no rush to run wires and tear apart the hatch, that\'ll be some other day...

And another amazing MkV find... They use ducktape in the assembly. It wraps around the hinge of the arm rest to prevent the mechanism from binding or rubbing on other parts in the arw rest console.

That is nice. Yes I saw the layout on the replacement what a joke that is. Also about the suspension I ordered the kw coils yesterday but they didnt have an option for the axle bolts,I ordered them from someone else. But I read this on vortex just today.-- \"if you do not remove the axles than i would have no need to purchase 2 new axle bolts, correct? i have been told by several people that they have done the MKV suspension install without pulling the axles. \"
magilson
07-15-2006, 01:39 PM
With what Kris and I learned while doing mine, it may be possible. It requires that both front wheels be off the ground to swing the front sway bar out of the way of the axle. Also, most of the people who have done it without removing the axle said they still had to partially slide the axle out of the knucle. Either way it would still be easier than the shit Kris and Glen had to help me with...

Have you heard anything about this? They are talking baout those 18 inch karthoum wheels.
Must be used in conjunction with Suspension Limiter Kit 000071501. A new rear alignment is required for all vehicles originally equipped with 16\", 17\", or 18\" wheels.

allright, new opinion question for all:
Yesterday at Treffen I saw the new RS4, it was teh hot. I love the brushed silver look of the side mirrors. So my question is... What if I got new side mirror covers and painted them that same brushed silver? Or could it only look good if I got the actual RS4 side mirrors? Or is it completely stupid. (nolan, be serious now...)

I\'m in the same position... I love the look of brushed mirror covers but I also like my black mirrors matching the car.
If you cant find a reasonable way to either paint or replace the covers to get the brushed mirror look - forget about it. RS4/S4 mirrors would be sick but OEM Audi parts are ridiculously expensive.
Also IMO - the grey would look better on your car. There is nothing on your car for the brushed aluminum mirrors to match with. If you had chrome window trim or something it would probably look better, but I think they will just stick out more.

it\'s not chrome, it\'s brushed silver... re-evaluate. what I would do is buy the mirror housing and paint it and see how I liked it. If it sucked I would still have the stock. I dunno. I need to spend some real time in photoshop to really see if I like it. I was also thinking the matte black... Either way it would be Matte finish rather than shiny...

Those chrome bling bling covers they sell are shit. The rs4 has that more hazy sweet look to them. I think there may be some law pending from audi that peopel cant sell the correct look of a Mirror? Or you can just spend the money and buy the real overpriced ve part known as the rs4 mirrors and make them fit somehow.

If you want to meet up sometime that can be arranged. Dave put the KW V1 setup on his new Rabbit as well and he seems to like it. Just send me a PM on some time that might work for you. I will be moving to another state at the end of the month so it will have to be quick :)
Yeah, my buddy got APR. It\'s consistantly faster throughout the entire range! Thing is at this point the \"big 3\" (APR, GIAC, and REVO) all end up with pretty much the same power. All the reviews I\'ve read say Revo gives the most smooth power. However the fastest GTI (that I am aware of) runs GIAC at this point. Then again I\'ve heard APR and GIAC make their power without going over 100% duty cycle on the injectors while REVO does. I\'m still doing some research

After many many days of waiting for what would become the most anticipated chip of all time, I am now Revo\'d.
I FUCKING LOVE IT.
Except now every mod after is gonna be like, oh, 10 hp, wow....
The turbo is actually audible now and it spools really quickly. First gear is pretty much useless, I thought I was done with it quickly before. It\'s also become a lot more difficult to pull away from an intersection without taking off.
Also, I need new tires.
Also, I need my EVOMS intake.
And the recently released Techtonics Turbo Back Exhaust for just over a grand (which at this point is a steal for a MkV). It rocks a single Borla Muffler and a sweet downpipe.

The guy who did my cut-out said he\'d do a 2.5\" downpipe-back exhaust for $200 if you bring him a muffler. I\'m sure he could fab you a downpipe too. Just another option.

Did some logging with my newly acquired Hex+Can Vag-Com.
My settings and conditions...
Revo stage I V2 (T3B6F9 essentially Revo 91 program). 15k miles, 93 octane using mtbe (not ethanol). outside temps at 65 deg F. Evo MS V-flow intake. no other mods.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i279/magilson/Revo%20T3B6F9/EGT.jpg
After seeing this, I\'m a little less worried about the chip than others, only because I\'m detuned though. If I was running the 93 octane setting I\'m sure my knock retard would be worse.
Overall lesson, prolly should have gone with APR. However I\'m not abandoning Revo yet. I have my SPS Plus coming in the mail and I\'ll mess with settings then!
Chuck@BF, Chad@SCI, thoughts on the data?
