Well, i sold my GLI because i just need a strong daily/cruiser. My plan for this is to clean clean clean clean it up and throw some money into some new replacement/maintenence parts. I Want it to be the cleanest stock 1989 Audi 100 many people have seen. I might put it in the show if i feel up to it. Pretty simple, but i thought it would be a neat little project thread.

Things i will be doing for sure:
Belts
Water Pump, Crank seal
Gasket replacement kits
Polishing Manifold and distributor.
Fix instrument cluster (one bad bulb)
Headliner
I have six new alpine speakers, and a new CDA-9885 HU i will be installing.
Major interior cleaning (thank the lord there are no cracks in the dash :))

First things first, I will be changing all fluids: Oil, Coolant, Brake, Tans., Power Steering.

Here are a few pics i snapped tonight. I didn't want to go in the cold so i just took some from inside the garage. I think you get the just of them. Only one super small rust spot on the entire car.

nope. Everything is in good mechanical order. Even if things run now, i would rather replace them just to be safe.

Well, this might sound like an obvious question, but i need an answer. I have changed oil many times in the past, but today i ran into a little problem. My manual says to fill 5qt. with a new oil filter. I filled about 4.7qt and checked the dipstick out of curiosity. I found that somehow it reads i have overfilled the engine with oil. I am figuring that after i run and let the oil settle into the filter it will decrease, but i wanted to make sure before i go screwing anything up...

any input?

yea thats usually what happens, just let it idle for 5 minutes so that way you can't do any real damage

yup. the dipstick is impossible to read. I let it run and everything runs smoothly. I will let it go for another 5-10 before i take it for a spin

Well, everything turned out successful today. Another day of work tomorrow. I am going to replace some instrument cluster lamps [a couple have burnt out]. I will also begin clean parts of the engine tomorrow, and maybe begin to tackle the E-brake problem.

Oh, i think i decided i will be looking for a stock 6-disk CD changer that was orignially equipped in the latter audi 100 Alpha systems. I want to keep my alarm and radio display on the dash. Plus, i don't really mind the look of the stock HU. I do, however, plan on swapping out my Alpine speakers, and more than likely amping them down the road. The incorporated power-amps of the Bose are blown (very little bass,) and I would rather listen to music with a wide tonal range.

I will post some more pics tomorrow.

I just realized i have the wrong speaker sizes. Look for some nice alpine speakers to be popping up in the classifieds shortly. I might even feel gernerous and sell my newer deck, after reading about install on the crutchfield site, sounds like i would be hurtin for a squirtin if i even attempted to install aftermarket stuff.

Midw3st_dubn
01-07-2008, 05:23 PM
yeah. it will clean up nicely. I would rather have bought it greasy and dirty than rusty. Really, no biggie. I don't feel like spending $160 (or whatever it is) a piece for those lines either. So, they will have to do.

well, i just struck gold.

I just found the factory training manual online for all C3 100/200s. This is pretty sweet.

I have been trying to diagnose a hesitation that i have on-and-off sometimes when i first start my car. I don't believe it is the fuel pump, i only have problems just taking off. The car will hesitate and lose power and sort of give a little grunt that sounds like a mini backfire. Does anyone have a clue what could be going on???:help:

I suppose it could be in my fuel system, and i have a hard time believing it to be the transmission because it shifts smoothly and holds power very nicely on the highway. Again, i need :help: in better understanding and troubleshooting problems with CIS.

Clean seats! I LOVE the smell of leather conditioner in my car!

What product did you use?

Midw3st_dubn
01-07-2008, 11:26 PM
i wanted lexol because i know it works well. I will surely use it next time, but this time i found some stuff called bluemagic. It is more a consumer product. Frankly, i didn't do as good of a job as i had expected. Next time i will hunt down for some lexol products.

Midw3st_dubn
01-07-2008, 11:34 PM
the lexol cleaner is pretty strong and is ment to help revitalize older leathers. The cleaner and conditioner are seperate for stronger results. For you, since you are just going to keep your seats in excellent condition, I would suggest the meguires all-in-one cleaner/conditioner down and o'reilly. i think it should do the trick.

I don't know if i will register or not. I wouldn't win anything if i did. Right now i don't have any incentive to work on it. I know i should since i am on break, but it has been cold, and i am lazy. I need to get some parts ordered for it, and a super thorough cleaning. I will also need some touch up paint from the dizzealer, and a headliner before the show if i was going to show it. The headliner is a shaggy Mcgee. Also, i need to track down a stock car phone. I have the antenna wired and everything, but an old audi certainly isn't complete without the BRICK.

new filter and plugs today. Seems to be running a little better.

The cat is shot. I will probably just go without it because i don't feel like spending $150 to get a bosal.

Tonight i bought some microlamps and instrument lights and replaced some--you guessed right-- instrument lights!

I will have the dash off sooner than later to replace some IP lights.

I also found the orignial sales reciept and service records in the car. It was serviced and carousel every 7,500 miles.

Alright Team Eurowerks- here is what i worked on last night.

Bought some microlamps from radioshack- 12v 60 m/a -yanked the switches and dug in.

Heated up the old solder and disposed of it-

Inserted the new microlamps without cutting the lead--help retain proper lamp height-

Oh, yeah.

I made my own code puller because audi never inserted a check engine light on older cars.

It's just a jumper with momentary switch, and a 12v LED/Resistor.

I crimped on some U-conns and cut a tang off of each one so it would easily secure into the factory ECU harness plugs[Female].

+ to - for LED to ECU harness

Short it out (close[press] momentary switch) for a few seconds to bypass memory settings, and vouila-- An LED blinking out systematic engine codes. YIP YIP :dj:

SO...

I cleaned the ISV, Throttle Body, Idle/FT switch, and checked a bunch of sensors with a Fluke. All the sensors seem to be in excellent working condition. The injector seals seem in good condition as well.

Next comes the dash light bulbs and a new catalytic converter. In the near future i plan on putting in a new headliner. The current headliner is sagging pretty badly.

I forgot to mention, my exhaust smells horrible, there is a rattle in the vicinity of the cat, heightened fuel consumption, and, every once in a while, there seems to be significant back-pressure causing some minor backfiring. I jacked the car up today and hit the cat with a rubber mallet and there was some rattling. I am going to assume the cat is shot, the symptoms seem to target it. Plus, the engine runs smooth, but the exhaust seems to be pretty harsh, and pretty darn hot. Yet more symptoms that target the cat.
