Quick question, I am pulling a motor/tranny on a MK1 rabbit and I now have the engine bay stripped of all junk. I have easy access to motor mounts and inner CVs. I have the correct driver to pull the inner CV bolts.

Question is this: Do I need to pull the axles in order to get the engine/tranny out or can I just undo the inner CV bolts?

I have an impact and the correct 30MM socket, just wondering if I should fire up the compressor.

The plan is to drop the motor/tranny out the bottom

Thanks

Joel

if its motor tranny together than no. undo the front control arm bolt from the chassis so you have some room.

i reccomend removing the ball joint on the hub underneath the axle. then you can just pull the strut towards you to get the axle out.

I've always just unbolted the strut from the knuckle, then twusted the knuckle down to get the axle out.

but that throws your camber off.

I pulled my transmission 3 times this summer.. The easiest way to deal with the axles is to disconnect them from the transmission. Then, look at the control arms, there's one bolt on each that holds them in; it faces the engine/transmission. Take the bolt out, and it will allow you to slide the control arm out a bit. You don't need to remove it all the way from the body, but a little bit is good and gives you plenty of clearance to pull the axle out if need be. You'll know what I mean when you do it. This way, no suspension geometry is messed up. Also, its' a heck of a lot easier to do versus pulling the ball joint out, or undoing the knuckle.
Also, make sure that you cover the ends of the CV's with something so that they don't get contaminated. The bentley suggests a plastic baggy.

Thanks for the info, I am pulling the motor/tranny tonight once the wife and kids go to sleep. I will give the control arm bolt a try, sounds like an easy way to do it.

I'll second that. Jeff really is THE alignment guy! He's worked on some pretty sweet cars too.
