Since I've owned my car, it hasn't had a good headliner, I mean, it really only had the front HALF of a headliner. I'm happy to finally have a complete ceiling and a fancy new covering. Yay! :happydance:

it was a lot more work than I had expected. the pattern was especially difficult to work with since now you can see anywhere it is stretched or twisted, but I LOVE IT x1000000!

Very cool. I have toyed with doing something like this in my car, but the headliner is HUGE.

May I recommend S.R. Harris up in Maple Grove... They are a upholstery fabric liquidator. Lots of good, heavy weight fabric for a lot less money. They also have a huge selection of leathers too...

SR Harris is where I got mine. The sign reads FABRIC OUTLET though.

I used this stuff called STICK-IT from a company called AVW. I tested it for strength on one area and the sample piece held REALLY well once cured for a day. We'll see about the duration over time :)

For what it's worth, I have used 3M "High Strength 90" on the headliners that I have done in the past. That stuff sets up very nicely.

I had a can of Super-90 as well, but it sprays out like silly string and has a yellow'ish color to it. You could see the lines and yellow behind the white areas. Super-90 is the strongest adhesive I know of, it just didn't work for me with all the white areas in the pattern. I did use it on the backside of the headliner where the fabric wrapped over to keep it all secure. Stick-It for the rest.

Looks fantastic! I just did my headliner as well but used the Super 90. The spray pattern can be a little weird once the can starts to get empty. There are some tricks to getting it to work, but it isn't the easiest.

I haven't been able to get to my headliner yet, but i covered the pillars and rear deck with suede and used loctite spray glue, and was very disappointed with the glue. the rear deck was pulling up within a couple days.

Mathew, when you did it, did you remove all of the material from the headliner or go over the old fabric?
I always used to remove everything, but i have heard that going over the old fabric can result in a smoother product and you dont risk the flexable headliner if you remove too much?

i removed all the non-original material and as much of the gunk from mine when i did mine.
if i had left the old stuff, it would have been softer, puffier. instead of a thin layer of pseudo-suede, showing the ribs in the headliner.
i used 3m super 90 iirc.

yeah, i suppose it is a different story with the mk2 headliner than it would be with mine in my mk3...

It's still holding GREAT! Edges, middle and corners!

Loctite works great on metal/metal, but I've never known it to be good for anything else.

This headliner had been recently recovered with a thin black foam fabric and I left it on after testing it's adhesion (which was GREAT). I put my houndstooth right over it. All the contours and ribs were fine and visible.

Mine has a little "puffy" to it, but it looks good to me.

I've never taken a mk3 headliner out, but I can't imagine it to be much different.

Man I totally didn't do mine in the '91 this summer like I had planned to. :(
I did however get twist pins and pin it up all over the place to help alleviate the sagging.

You could get this done on the next Studio-land GTG?!?!

LOL, that was my goal for the FIRST studio land!
My biggest problem has been getting motivation to go find cool fabric. I think I might just go with plain tan or w/e and get it at joann

how much fabric did you get for your headliner? is the jetta headliner pretty close in size to the GTI headliner?

i bought 4 yards for my golf and had plenty left over. don't get less than 3. or...hey, measure the length of your roof and buy a little more than that.
i have wanted to do my jetta's for a long time, but can't see removal and re-install being very fun without a hatch.

I've never taken a mk3 headliner out, but I can't imagine it to be much different.
All I meant by that was about the ribs in the actual headliner for a mk2. The mk3 one is smooth, so going over the original stuff with the thin fabric might be fine, maybe.
Ehh, somthing i will tackle once the engine/bay start to get wrapped up. No reason to spend money on fabric on a non running car!

If you are going to do your mk3's headliner make sure to pull all the old fabric off and use a wire brush to scrub off all the foam underneath. replace the foam and fabric. just going over the fabric will not hold up and look like ass.
