Haters be jealous.
My coworker said I was stupid for buying a new tdi because everyone has posted online they can't get more then 38-39mpg. All the "online reviews" say they are garbage according to him.
I let him know I got 41mpg Sunday and 50% was city or idling messingwith the radio.
He said it isn't accurate, probably because he bought a prius.
Haters man....wow

My father-in-law's new Passat TDI gets like 39 city mpg but he only has like 200 miles on it so far so we will see how the highway miles are.
And who cares if they "only" get 38-39 mpg. That is still better IMO than getting 40+ mpg in a Prius with a ginormous toxic battery...

Still need to put that new blue EW sticker on it for her.
Driving in 10-20mph traffic today the mfi said she got 31.5mpg lol.
Although the DGS is acting very odd now after stop and go driving today. I told her to try sport mode so it holds gears longer and wont keep up/downshifting in traffic.

I am not sure if the DSG in the new Turbo Beetle is the same one used in the TDI but my mother-in-law's new turbo beetle will shift into a ridiculously high gear after 15-20mph. If you start to accelerate at a normal pace, once you hit about 20 mph and it shifts out of 2nd, it will shift all the way to 6th gear (6th gear at 25-30mph...) and the car just kinda bogs down and you have to push your foot down harder to maintain the same rate of acceleration. My mother-in-law didn't notice it but it has drove me crazy for the handful of times I have driven her car. I pretty much force myself to use sport mode or manually shift the gears.

I think the DSG has a learning curve? As in, it will become better the more you drive it.
It does, like all autos built after about 01-02.
On a tdi though, its programmed to maximum MPG in "d" mode. So yes, it shifts from 2-6 in traffic then back to 2 then to 3 then back to 2 then to 6 causing all the clunky clunky action.
It drives perfectly fine now not driving in traffic for a day.
Sport mode is key for traffic driving (or manual mode)

oil changes are at 10k ;)
uh, for lease owners haha
I plan on keeping this to 200k. Will be our "road trip" vehicle. boston and or seattle next year. h20 next year possibly.
Its most important to change oil at 5k, 10k then every 10k if mostly hw miles.
10k is way to long if you are not doing 90% hw driving.
JFettig
09-23-2012, 09:29 PM
I can understand short changing the first one but the guys obsessed with oil over at tdiclub are getting oil analyzed and you actually get less wear running it out to 10k because of all the additional detergents and whatnot that you introduce when you short change it. Some of those guys run bypass filters and stretch it out to 20k.

Not sure how different the new CR engines are but I run 10K all year round regardless of driving style. What does the owners manual say to do?

Is that intake worth it to buy? I remember hearing intakes on tdi's are worthless.
JFettig
09-27-2012, 07:55 AM
Rawtek makes nice stuff for sure, I'll see one of their downpipes soon.
Upgraded intakes below 250hp(diesel) and 300hp(gas) in my opinion are worthless, unless you think turbo noises are way cool! ;)
If you get the Rawtek downpipe and mid pipe, you can adapt anything to the end or even add a cat or resonator wherever you want.
Stay tuned, 250hp turbo upgrades will be released soon ;)

09-27-2012, 08:29 AM
The flex pipe on that dpf delete does not look big enough for a tdi. Those motors shake so much, it's a wonder how those little flex pieces don't break.
JFettig
09-27-2012, 08:53 AM
These new TDI's sound and feel like gas cars, 6" is the typical length for a flex on TDI's,
Fearnside
09-27-2012, 09:47 AM
Couldn't tell the length from the pic, and I didn't read it, so i could have missed the size. Had to get a beefy one for the DP on my Dad's tdi, but it is a mkiv. Those bad boys shake!
JFettig
09-27-2012, 10:02 AM
The OD of the pipes is 3" and it looked like 2x the OD in length so I made a good guess. Yes, MK4 TDI's need a pretty long one, they see lots of movement in the flex, especially with worn out motor mounts.

Well looks like the car has developed a misfire. It's what my wife has called "surging" at highway speeds. Let it sit overnight outside ad went I drive it this morning and when I ce to a stop it was misfiring at the stop sign. Then when accelerating and cruising you could feel it. When I got to panera and parked it was very much so misfiring. After we came back it has run fine since.
Any thoughts if this is from gas stations switching over to winter blend? Only use uls hw fuel. No bio

9800 miles. I guess it happens when the wife fills up at Kwip trip in Rochester. One of the only places with diesel down there.
We only fill with ultra low sulfur highway diesel at holiday else wise. No b5
I didn't scan it today with the vag com. It was definitely misfiring. So it had to have set a code. Will scan tomorrow morning.

The only ones we fill up at are the uls hw diesel.
So that means its not uls it's b5
