I have been looking to get into a euro again, and I have been looking at getting into an older Mercedes. I have found one on craigslist that looks to be in pretty good shape minus the rear floor boards.

Heres the link: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/csw/cto/2909359634.html
Some Video of it running: http://youtu.be/GGXav9sW6Ws

I am going to go look at it this week some time and see how bad the rear floor boards really are. I have a welder so I am really not worried about replacing the rear floor boards. I also want to check out what kind of miles it has and how extensive of brake work it needs.

I dont know too much about older mercedes and I dont really know how much they go for. Im looking for some insight from some of you guys on what these usually go for, what I should offer, and what I should pay for a top price.

Is it an automatic? If so, it will be the most boring car to drive, ever.

I had a '76 240D with a 4 spd manual and 0-60 times were about 25 seconds but at least I could row the gears. The 220D is considerably slower. I would often lose the stoplight drag race to UPS trucks and city buses.

That's too much for one with a rusted floor. I paid $2400 for mine, ran perfect, dealer records since new and not a spot of rust (TX car almost its whole life).

They don't get 42mpg either.

If you can get it on the cheap go for it. I bet the guy doesn't have too many people interested in it, especially with the rusted floor. They run forever and parts are readily available. There's a reason tons of these are still being used as taxis in Africa.

alright, cool. Thanks for the insight. Maybe I will stay away from the diesel and look at some gas ones. I'm not worried about going fast, I just want it to cruise arouund in on the weekends.

I doubt the gas ones are any faster.

I know I love the lines, thats why I want one!

I was referring to the gas ones because there are a couple on craigs for about a grand but are "not running, but were running when stored" condition.. I would love to swap in a v8 but i dont know how confident i would be doing the whole thing solo.

What do you guys think a fair price would be on this diesel one in the condition it is in. I dont want to rip myself off due to lack of knowledge in the mercedes scene.

If you do the v8 swap id be more then happy to help. That way its easier for me to do in the future on my own car :D

I will be sure to jot that down!

He has it listed for 2k i am not planning on going more than 1500 for it.

I may call him up this weekend and go take a peek at it. I know I could probably pick one up for cheaper in non running condition, but I absolutely love that color.

Just make sure the injector pump has been replaced or rebuilt (with paperwork to prove it). they are like 1200$ for a reman pump, and when they start going out they will be NOISEY! even though its a diesel, it will sound bad. like hammer clicking on thick metal noise.
Other then that, electronics are a pain, all cis garbage if its a gas engine. Wiring will probably be shot everywhere in the engine bay because its a diesel. There are some scrap yards out east that sell parts and or rebuild some stuff on them. I have worked on a coulple 460/500sl's from then and they are pigs to work on but run forever.

Also, if you are putting a V8 in one, i would hold out for a gas version. Much easier conversion.
