View Full Version : Tire suggestions

I'm looking to buy new tires for my 18 x 8.5 AMG aero II's since the camber on the rears started to wear down the tires unevenly. I knew this would happen, but I didn't really care because I don't like the tires on them at the moment. The reason why I am asking for tire suggestions is because I am thinking about a little bit more tire stretch to get rid of the camber on the rear. I am not looking for a lot of stretch, just a little bit so I don't rub the fender so much.
I am no where near an expert on tires so I want to ask for opinions. Stick with the same tire size or stretch a little?
Tire size: 225/40ZR18

If you think stretching would be a good idea, what size tire would you suggest? I also want to reiterate that I am only looking for a little stretch possibly.

They are et44 and I'm not running anything else with them.

do a 215/40 Falken Ziex 512. a little stretch built into the tire and another 10mm difference. or you could try a 225. they really do have a bit of stretch built into them.

I had thought about doing a 215/40 but I have been looking at two specific tires and I am not sure how they would look/work with a little stretch. The two that I have been looking at are the Continental ExtremeContact DW or the Michelin Pilot Super Sport. Anyone have experience with either of these two tires? I'll look into the Falken tires also.

continental tires are a great tire but with stretching a tire you might as well go with something a little cheaper. The michelins are a decent tire for great tire price. Like I said before Go with a set of Falkens. The 225 stretches a little on an 8" wide wheel. They are a great tire for a decent tire price. That is a 225 on an 8" wheel next to a 265.

Your toe was bad, not camber. The camber just pinpointed the wear to one spot and make it wear faster. But if your toe was good, it shouldn't have worn badly in the first place.
A 225 on an 8.5 will be a little stretch (a lot of people who are into stretch probably wouldn't even consider it stretched).

Don't get Falkens. They are super noisey.

I did the camber myself, which would explain why things weren't aligned well. Looking at the 225 tires on my wheels I can tell that there is a very small amount of stretch to the upper part of the sidewall, but there is still a good amount of tire over the wheel lip it seems. I'm thinking at this point of doing a 215/40 but still haven't fully made up my mind. Maybe just switching to a different brand tire with the same dimensions as the old ones will look a little different/ better. I'm not sure, hence the reason I'm asking for advice.

I don't like to much noise. I get enough noise with the Dunlops on there now that I want to go with a little quieter tire. I've read reviews on tirerack that that the continentals are pretty quiet.
Well every tire stretch differently. The amount of stretch on a Falken 512 versus pretty much any other tire on the road is completely different. Now if you are looking for an exposed lip then you will probably definitely want 215's.
I personally like the way Toyo T1-R's stretch.

I have 18x8.5 et 44 with 8mm spacer on my fronts, so final et36. I have run 215/35 Nitto NeoGens and 225/35 Eagle GSD3. Both stretched very nicely. The Nittos were a bit softer and stretched more, although the 215/35s were a bit too small for the height/look I was going for. I LOVE the way the 225/35 look and perform, and it's the perfect tire size for my setup. No rubbing, a lot of contact patch, and it fills the fenders up just right. Let me know if I can help in any way, as I have tried several other wheel/tire combos on my Rabbit.

I've looked at some pictures of the 225/35 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric tires and they look good. That may be better then guessing how 215/40 Continental tires will look on my AMG's.

I'd be happy to take pics for you, or you're welcome to check out the car in person when I'm up in the cities.
Both the gsd3 and asymmetrics are very nice performance tires from my experience.

If you could send me a picture that would be awesome, otherwise seeing it in person would be cool too.

Yeah, I think a 225/35 should work pretty well. I did get get a quote from NTB on some BF goodrich G-force T/A KDW 2 tires and they sound like a fairly good tire. I may try those.
