Hey all,

We had so much fun last year building the Radio flyers that I have been looking for a project for the fall/winter. Awhile back I found these guys building Boardtrack racers online. Using EBAY 60-80cc motor kits and building and/or modifying frames to resemble board track motorcycles they build stuff like this.

Link to motor kits online. http://www.bikeberry.com/gas-engine-kits.html

Those interested in building something cool this Fall/winter join in here. While I will be building a replica board track bike any type of bike is welcome.

Like we did last year the shops tools will be available for use by those building. The welders(Mig and Tig), grinders, torches, shear and metal shrinker/stretcher and this year the 8 foot leBlond lathe and bridgeport for those tricky parts.

Let me know if you want in.

These things can be built for as cheap as $200-300. I plan on using a brigs vanguard motor if I can find one cheap enough.
On craigslist there are all kinds of vintage frames or vintage style bikes for cheap.

I have a 2 cycle weedeater motor. If someone is on a tighter budget, It could be had for the low low price of Free.

I should be down a few different times

I think I'll participate as well. I'll probably work on it mostly up here in Saint Cloud and go down there every so often and fabricate and hang out with you guys. This is just the project to get me back into top welding and fabricating form.

I've been thinking of making a gasbike for a while...

Gasbike.net has some neato kits, or just parts if you want to piece together your own setup.

This sounds like fun to me!
So do these get classified as mopeds if you stay under 50cc? I'm not sure how the law works when you put a motor on something that didn't have it before.

I've done some exploring but I keep finding contradictions. I found one this that said motorized bicycles under 50cc and under 30mph don't need registration and I've found ones that said they do. So what happens if I want an 80cc do I have to get motorcycle registration and put lights on it?

Tell the cop that pulls you over its a motorized bike and its a modded 49cc... like he is going to be able to tell its 80cc. And there is nothing illegal about modded 50cc's

Are people going to try and build their own frames and forks or what? attain an old steel frame bike and build in a tank and engine?

Anything under 49cc and has the option for human power is considered a motorized bicycle. This is legal in MN.

Also up to 3 wheels over 12"?

Im trying to find a steel framed oldr bike that I can cut up or like some have done online. pick up a "vintage look" cruiser at target/walmart on clearance and cut the hell out it and enjoy the nice new other parts. Two weeks ago sams club was clearing out their bikes for around $50-85.

I was digging around in the back and found my 1957 David Bradley chainsaw. If I remember correctly is 77cc and has a gear reduction box on the side of it.
Should work out nice and fit the bill on the retro look.

once these are done how do you get them street legal? can you just "tell" them its a 49cc so you dont have to get a motorcycle permit? im just a little confused on the legal obstacles for these

sprstu

if it has pedals i think its just a moto-bike and doesn't need to be tabbed? and anything under "49cc" and you don't need a motorcycle license or permit to ride.

ok found the ruling

Motorized bicycles must be registered and licensed at an annual tax of $6. No title is required. They may be operated on streets and highways if registered, but the operator needs either a driver’s license or a motorized bicycle operator permit. They may not be operated on a sidewalk except to cross it. The vehicle must have a headlight and, if operated at night, a taillight. If the vehicle is an electric-assisted bicycle an operator must wear a helmet when riding on a street or highway; if it is a motorized bicycle a helmet is required only up to age 18. Operators of motorized bicycles must wear eye protection but operators of electric-assisted bicycles need not do so. Headlights and taillights are required for nighttime operation.

When are you actually planning to start the friday night thing? I have a motorized bike now, built with one of the cheapo chinagirl 2 stroke bike engines,I can bring it by for people to try...
The one thing I have heard rumors of on some of the motorized bike forums is, get a motor soon if you want a 2 stroke one, as of the first of 2012 the govm't is gonna really crack down on ANYTHING 2 stroke powered...

Great point about the motors and there availability.

I will be putting together a schedule for the Friday night build nights in the next couple of days.
