Nope not a wood grain steering wheel,
So i am thinking of getting my wheels painted......... woodgrain.
I have no idea of how this would be done besides airbrushed? Anyone have any ideas of accomplishing this or anyone that would do this?
Wheels are phonedials.

Thoughts and ideas?

Home depot has a tool for painting faux woodgrain. Its intended for interior latex, but I don't know why it wouldn't work in your application. The curves might be a bit difficult.

Water transfer would be the way to go for sure.

In a nutshell you have a design that is printed on a backing paper. Then the paper and the printed design are placed in a tub of water. After some time the paper is removed, leaving the design floating on the top of the water, sort of like an oil slick. You then dip the part you want the design added to into the water, through the design. It is pretty spectacular to watch happen.

Then you clear coat like normal.

'toasted' on here had some parts of his Scion done, and I think he was trying to represent a shop a few years ago... he might still have the contact info.

Veru interested to see these finished. Please be sure to write a detailed description of your expirience with the shop and lots of pictures. You might even be able to mention you are from a local online club and would be interested in seeing the process first hand to answer any questions for us... Just a thought.

Sorry, I just now saw this thread.

You need hydro imaging. I used to sell this service, I used a vendor in WI for the work.

This process is AWESOME! Here is how it works if you haven't looked it up already....

1. Prep and paint the item you want dipped. The paint color chosen will drive the color of the pattern chosen. For example, you can change the shade of a wood or carbon fiber pattern by laying down a different color in this first step since the patterns are transparent.

2. Once parts are painted, you dip the parts in the pattern. Basically the pattern is film based and the film is activated with water. You lay a sheet of the pattern out over a tank of water and then dip your part through the film slowly. The pattern is then bonded to your part.

3. Once the part dries you spray on a clearcoat to protect everything. The cool custom trick here is you can apply candy clears if you want to make cool effects.

I owned an xB back when I was selling this service and I had tons of stuff on the interior done in burled wood pattern. The best part was we played with colors and clears and came up with this awesome combo.

We also did a set of Sportmaxx 002 wheels for a buddy of mine in a lepard skin pattern..... bad ass.

I would post pics, but I can't access flickr at work. If you want to look through my sets you may be able to find the photos, otherwise I can post tonight.

Also, expect to pay in the neighborhood of $0.75 to $1.00 per square inch depending on the complexity of the project. This may have changed a little since I haven't sold these services since 2008.

If you have any other questions I can probably help.

No DIY needed.

1. Buy the film
2. get a big tank of water set up
3. dip parts

The kits I did see came with some sort of activator and clear coat. I assumed those were mandatory, are they not necessary?

Know of any reputable places to buy the film? The websites I found either wanted bulk orders or looked like they were designed in 1995 and not very professional.

You have to buy the film in bulk. That is why there aren't many people doing it themselves. Rolls of film can get pricey as well.

There may be an activator involved, it depends on the film purchased. This activator just gets sprayed on the surface of the water in the tank.

The clear coat is standard paint. Nothing special required there.

And yes, I know of at least two dozen hydro imaging places with websites and they all look like they were put together by someone working with a 286 and and EGA monitor.

Was anyone watching American Chopper Jr vs Sr reruns yesterday?

They were using this process on one of their bikes and they televised the whole process.
