View Full Version : Campwerks 2011 *old thread*

It's been discussed in other threads, but I propose that campwerks become a non euro-specific event. Instead, I think that attendance should be limited to club members and that they're welcome to drive/bring any drive-worthy car that they own.
I don't suggest this for my own benifit (since I'm sure I could've brought the subaru down last year) but I just think it's more of a weekend about hanging around with buddies and going on a nice cruise. It's not really about cars, so I see no reason to draw the line that way.
My $.02.
My other suggestion is pre-registration. I also think it'd be fun to pick new locations each year. That may be too much work, though.

There won't be another campwerks. :(
That's really a bummer, as I had a great time last year, but I understand the reasoning behind not wanting to take the risk again and having the turnout be as low as it was last year. I'm really sorry that it didn't work out, but I hope that maybe a group of us will be able to figure out something similar, but less formal (less monetary risk for the club) to do this year, as it was a perfect way to end the summer, and a great way to break-in my new car :P.

Yeah, not really a bummer at all. Nothing stops a group of us from going camping/driving.
That solves that though, dowhatyouwantwerks 2011.

I'll be going on another camping adventure this year for sure. It's just too bad that so many people raised their hand to join and then dumped out when it came time.

When I was in college, I rented a big ass house in FL for spring break. I charged handraisers 35% up front. Non-refundable if they backed out 30 days prior to rental date.

I would 100% want to do campwerks again, just do mandated preregistration, no refunds at all, period. Well, maybe for special circumstances handled on a case by case basis. On that note, there is nothing to stop a group of dedicated people from just heading off to go camping without reserving a complete campsite ahead of time.

I wouldn't mind if peoples campsites were spread out across the campground, it's always fun to walk from campsite to campsite with a rolling cooler in tow.

Die Frau

Actually, I think it was $15. Which makes your point even funnier.
It was much more than $20 in my world. I needed to take time off of work to go, which being out of vacation time, it would have been unpaid time off. But either way I am always very little on cash so even $15 can be hard to come by for me sometimes.
Then why say you could go in the first place?

its an ARB rooftop tent, its available from many different off road sites, i've found it on atlanticbritish.com and a few other toyota-based sites as well. they are non-vehicle specific so they will go on any SUV or wagon i suppose. prices range from $500-1300 from what i've found so far. pricey but it does include a lot of kit, even a memory foam mattress.

I think we would go again, for sure. I like the opportunities for ABB - Adults Behaving Badly! (well, some of us did.) I also like the idea of pre-pay registration - maybe with a cut-off date - so any $$ for the campsite are well covered. Maybe it's a small group site, maybe a large one. Doesn't really matter if we all camp next to each other, as everyone seemed to find the few fires anyway. Sign me up as a volunteer coordinator for the next one, if it works out...

Alright, it's getting late in the year and we need to get something planned if we want to do this. Is this going to be a "eurowerks sanctioned" event or not? Either way, I would be willing to help out where needed if it means that this will happen. I had a great time last year and I really want to do this again this year. I would be fine with the same campground again this year, as well as the same route (it was a beautiful drive!). Pre-registration is an obvious must, considering how quickly people backed out last year, but that is an easily solvable issue. I know that there was a lot of disappointment last year with the amount of people that showed up, but I really hope that it didn't leave a bad enough taste in people's mouths for this to not happen again.

I vote for a more "rustic" campsite than last year. 2 cents.

Agreed. Some seclusion would be nice, as much fun as the livestock and 'locals' in golf carts were.

Not sure exactly what all the criteria may be. Options are pretty available through those two sites. The DNR links may be a bit more "tree hugger" than we might want. The Explore MN site has boxes that can be checked then shows what areas have those specifics. The Explore site also has a "search by area" option if there is a particular area we are trying to stay around.
Group camp (up to 35) at Frontenac? Close to good driving roads!!! :D

the only reason I didnt choose a state operated campground, is it will be harder to book a huge section of the grounds, and they usually frown on boisterous behavior and drinking.
I would like to think more than 35 people would show up. Might be interesting to see how much of the "58" we could get though.
well put Kris. That place is also not terribly well situated near either bridge across the river. It would be nice to be closer to one of those!

THat too. When I originally looked I did do quite a bit of research finding a place that would not only accept us and a bunch of antics, but was reasonably close to the city without being too close, and also near some of the best driving roads in the midwest :)
regardless, any suggestions are welcome :)
I did love Hay Creek Valley - it was super awesome to have nice clean real bathrooms, and having that restaurant on site was great too! That place would be super hard to beat.
I'm also working on a google map of some of those great driving roads - I woud love to invite any collaborators to share their faves in the area as we craft a 2011 cruise.

There is a huge moutian bike trail there, a giant footbal/soccer/baseball field. Not too far from a lake with swimming.
I used to camp in the "east loop" its pretty nice over there.

I realize that driving roads is one aspect of this event. I have a hard time feeling like I'm camping when you can see a cty. hwy. from the front of the tent. Just something that is a bit more secluded.

The part that's difficult is finding a place that will accept a large group, with potential rowdiness. I understand it's not the best tent camping location, but we have to take what we can get.

Remember that Dubs in the Valley at the campsite 3ish years ago? That was pretty damn good and was wicked close to civilization. Must have been the tree cover that gave it that feel. Something like that would be thumbs up. I didn't realize how far that Hayward location was either.
