Well it might be a bit soon to start a project thread, becasue the car isn't even here yet... but wahtever, I'm bored, and excited, so eat me :P

Car is a 78 Rabbit, at this point it's a shell with a bunch of parts, like a kit car.

http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v71/119/58/507621608/n507621608_77384_8561.jpg

Engine that comes with the car is a fully rebuilt... well... head needs to be assembled... 2.0 16v. New Mahle pistons and rings, and new seals/gaskets throughout. New oil pump and water pump.

Comes with MK2 GLI seats, not 100% sure I'll be using these yet, might just put them in the MK2 Coupe daily driver.

The plan is to run the 16v on OBD1 X-flow engine harness and fueling, with a chip from I don't know where. Going to keep it mostly stock, it'll be plenty fun that way, and reliable for the most part.

The car is coming from California, with fresh paint, but no clearcoat yet. I would like to get the whole thing repainted in a high metallic white paint (a step below "Bass-Boat" on the metallic scale) but with time and money being issues, I may just get it cleared and call it good. The color is really nice as is... so we'll see what happens.

Some parts collecting... and painting "Dark Hammered Bronze"

Also a Techtonics downpipe
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v81/119/58/507621608/n507621608_92231_9511.jpg

And buisness to convert the serpentine belt... coated in the same hammered paint.
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v81/119/58/507621608/n507621608_92233_9988.jpg

We're on Lincoln Dr.

Took a quick picture of the second batch of parts in, the car wont be here for a few weeks.

Thats new control arms with poly bushings and new ball joints from Black Forest Industries, new strut bearings/mounts, G60 injector cups, enough new white nylon clips for all the trim, poly bushings for the rear arm (thanks Kris!) ,new windshield seal, new chrome for ALL the windows, crank and waterpump pullys to convert to the later belt style... and of course a nice, old, Rabbit model :)

So your Rabbit is in the mail. Just left the driveway. I seem to have misplaced my digi-camera so no pics (sorry). It was over in about 35 seconds anyway. The driver called a flatbed towtruck and had the car lifted into the back of the semi trailor. No ramps, no winches...cool. The driver was a pretty cool guy, he didn't really care what was in the car. I also got the DMV shit taken care of, so we're just waiting for the pink to get here in the mail so i can send it off to you. So you'll probly get the car next week sometime...groovy. Let me know if anything comes up.

Later,
Dan

That is the VW part pile, some of that will be used, some will not. The wheels will not. Thjey came with the Rabbit but at 13" are too small for my taste.

Worked on the Transmission tonight.

Sold the Jetta, ordered paint today, got a flywheel from Brent, going to get hubs from him this week when we both have time. haha.

Also ordered a new trans. pushrod and T.O. bearing cap, I hope to be able to get that engine together soon. So once the paint is done I can really just put it all together!

Still looking for MK2 rear disk stub axles/calipers/carriers/rotors. And should probably either rebuild or replace my 22mm master cylinder and booster.

Just look for a paint in the color you want with a 'hammered' label. Thats what gives the texture. Try finding something that's made for high heat situations? I'm sure any parts store can help you out too.

Tomorrow I'm going to try and do the exterior!

For my first REAL paintjob it's turning out pretty decent. I painted my old Rabbit, but that doesn't count becasue it was in a parkinglot using a touchup airgun. Haha. Kris cleaned up one of the spare fenders he had layin around and I tested a bit on it in preparation for tomorrow. It goes on pretty well, hopefully I can gt it done with minimal mess ups.

It's a single stage urethane, that you can clear if you want to. Since it's metallic I can't wetsand so I'm going to clear and wetsand that (to get the orange peel out) Also, I need to do more color coats on the hood, when I called her quits I thought the tiger striping was from gloss to matte, but now that it's dried some I think it needs more cover.

Soo, I need to order a quart maybe of color, and some clear for it.

That M3 on that link was painted with a 2 stage, it's meant to have a clear. At any rate, when I'm ready again I'll scuff it, do another color coat, and then a clear. And no, it probably wont be this weekend.

Engine and interior will not be cleared, they both look great, and will mostly be covered up. I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to assemble the car and mask then do the final color and clear...

If you did it yourself?

That's really the key, weather or not you do it yourself.

Go to that vwcolors.com place and look at paint prices. I wouldn't know exactly how much paint it would take, but I would guess it to be around (probably less than) a gallon. I'm pretty sure a gallon would take car of the exterior, no idea how much needed for under hood areas, interior and door jambs.

Add to that cost the cost of sanding materials and the cost of other prep products (primers, fillers, metal to patch any rust areas, etc). You could probably get by for less than $1000.

OptimusGlen
03-12-2008, 12:09 PM
I used a Gallon on mine, and need to buy just a little more. If you were painting it the same color as it is now you should be able to get by for less since you wouldn't have to do the interior and door jams etc. If you did yours yourself I'd say 600-800, but defiantely read up on it a lot.

Also, no more thread jacking ;)

Today I got a lot done, though it probably doesn't look like it...

http://photos-608.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sctm/v216/119/58/507621608/n507621608_1033642_798.jpg

The biggest thing, rear disks put on. Big thanks to Kris for the new rotors, and I suppose an extended thanks to someone else who gave them to Kris for free. They're not bled yet (have to do the 22mm MC and booster) but the e-brake lines (Rocco) are hooked up and it's all cleaned/painted/new.

Also finished the windows and trim in both doors. I would have probably done the rear 1/4 windows and the hatch glass too, but find that there is a thin, almost clear film on them... like tint but... not tinted. So I'm going to have to get all that off before I put those in.

Also installed the windshield wiper motor and transmission, as well as the hood latch business.

OptimusGlen
03-16-2008, 12:34 AM
nope, the plan now is to build it up. Later I can remove the trim and grills etc and scuff, paint, clear, wetsand, and buff. Since the jams and cracks are the correct color I will just mask around the windows and be good. I don't plan on clearing the interior or the engine bay.

cleaned up the windows yesterday with some stripper, got the weird tint stuff off, but they still have a light greenish blueish haze to em... which works I suppose. :) Installed em with cleaned up gaskets and new chrome.

Before you ask, no, it's not over spray on the windows giving it the hue. I've cleaned em to the bone with razor blades and chemicals. And I put the rubber and chrome on in the house so it's not a reflection... I think maybe they're just old?

http://photos-b.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sctm/v216/119/58/507621608/n507621608_1046013_585.jpg

I don't really mind the hue, it's not really noticeable in the car, only when the window is set against a white wall. Once it's together I'll probably end up cleaning them some more, but for now I'm satisfied.

I really wish I wasn't missing a box with Rabbit parts in it though :( Mint door handles with chrome strips and new flag mirrors don't grow on trees. :P

OptimusGlen
03-28-2008, 09:36 AM
Yes I have the Rocco 16v prop-valves and they are going to be hidden inside the car. There is already a valve of some sort on each rear brake line and it's right by the front seat bracket, so I will take it out and install the 16v Rocco pieces.

I'm keeping the 16v Rocco manifold for no reason other then I'd like to keep as much stuff off the wheel wells as possible. So an intake tube will come off the drivers side and forward, hopefully covering up wires on the way. :) I think originally I was going to run CIS or something, and I thought it would be easier with the Rocco part... haha.

Also put the other two 15's on the front, removed early front brakes, got the 9.1's on but realized I was missing the carriers :( so I only got the disks on, I also installed the e-brake handle and hooked up the lines, and put in the front engine mount and starter.

OptimusGlen
04-08-2008, 08:44 PM
depends on the car.

vweezly
04-09-2008, 07:33 AM
Yup... looks like a union to me too... you could put an adjustable prop valve there though. Are there 2 lines running to the rear or were they joined to one before that and split with a T fitting in the rear?

OptimusGlen
04-09-2008, 08:33 AM
there are two lines running to the rear. This union is identical to the one on the drivers side. So I would either need to get two adjustable valves and make sure they're set the same, or figure a way to get my rocco valves in there.

vweezly
04-09-2008, 08:43 AM
Shouldn't be too hard. From what a few people have told me, when running rear discs in a bunny... Rocco valves combined with adjustable props is the way to go. VWralley on vortex suggested running wicked hard ware resistant pads in the rear if not running adjustables. The rears can still lock under hard braking, but it's not as bad. Nahm sayin?

Edit... I just gave an answer that I hate.... "Shouldn't be too hard". You will need to get a bubble flare tool attach one of the male fittings that can screw into the rocco valve at that point... then keep one of the female compression fittings so the other end of the rocco valve can attach. Or... buy some adjustables and put them in where the compression fittings are... but you'll have to move the passenger side one so it's next to the drivers side. The you can just put the rocco valves where I put mine :

Megasquirt v2.2 and harness are for sale, as well as Rocco intake manifold upper, lower, and valve cover.

installing megasquirt involves just as many, and probably more quirks and headaches. There isn't decades upon decades of knowledge and resources either. I hated megasquirt because its a PITA. Stock management will always be the easiest. Far easier than carbs. But, as for carbs vs standalone.... they cant be that far off from each other.

I think Glen will be much better w/ somethin he can just plop open a book for, and turn some mechanical gizmos. That said, im glad the ones jes is getting already ran on a car ;)

hamradio

But, kris, you were running ITB's with MS, right? Wouldn't just a throttle body be much easier to tune, and more reliable?

I've always kind of wanted to run a 16v with bike carbs on it. Some oldschool round slide mikunis. What a pain in the ass that would be, to tune. Cool, nonetheless.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You contribute a great deal. And carbs sound rad. A turbo does too... and so do Kris's cams...
