I really want to try ice racing but I don't know anything about it. I just want to hear what you guys know about it and when events might occur.

Also are there laws regarding driving on the ice? Do you need to rent the lake or something to hold an event like this? Or could I theoretically just drive onto the lake and have a good ol' time?

Lastly, post ice racing pictures!

1: find boat ramp
2: drive down boat ramp onto lake
3: ????
4: profit

seriously though, as long as the ice is thick enough you can drive on lakes. Most have a 45 mph speed limit though, iirc

I think a lot of lakes in the metro would be 30mph max, plus you could get harassed by cops if fisherpeople call you in. I was thinking the same thing, just find a lake and put out some cones for fun. Im pretty sure you can find a lake just a bit out of the cities that has very little traffic and have a pretty good time.

My friend lives on Rodgers Lake in Medota Hights. Almost no traffic ever. There is maybe an ice house or two on the lake. It is a really shallow lake so it frezzes through on most of the lake so the ice house are usually all around the deap spot that has a bubbler to keep from killing all the fish. Only issue is that I dont think there is a boat launch.

Or any small lake with a beach. My be a little trickier though

Many 2x4s + plywood. Done. I'd like to try this, but my car's in MI. I dont think a RWD pickup would be the easiest thing to control on ice, LOL I'd like to stop by and watch, though.

Ice racing is a blast! I've been doing it for 7 years now. If you're serious about it check out the IIRA, there is a link to the rules and everything on the website. you should come out to some of the races, I drive the 22 car a 84 rabbit

Looks pretty sweet but I don't have to space or tools to make a race car.:( Ill just hone my sideways skills for now.

We should make a team (as a community) and build it over the summer  I know a lot of us don't have the means and/or space to build anything by ourselves. It would be a good way for n00bs like myself to learn more about cars, and a good excuse for others to get away from the wifey and drink for a few hours.

My dad and I have a spare car yet (84 rabbit) set up with cage and all, just needs motor/some body work and it would be ready to go! just don't have to time for 2 race cars right now. I think a Eurowerks team would be fun!

I watched them do it last year and it looks super fun. I am going to try and do it this winter.

Eurowerks team would be sick. But we would also need a Eurowerks work shop...
It could be called The Werks Shop

Anybody know of/have a place we could set something up? How would we pay for parts? Should we start a new, Werk Shop thread to set this up? :D

Jack

Well I was watching Wheeler Dealers a while ago and they went to a parts shop for some refurbished wheels. The shop was started buy an online enthusiast group. Potentail profit from sales of parts? Haha Dreaming big now.

Potential extreme money loss from building a car?

fixed lol

Maybe Kris or somebody can chime in about the viability of the idea.

As already posted, the GLQC runs a few/handful of events every winter, typically out at Lake Cynthia out by Prior Lake. I've gone a few times to spectate and it looks like a blast.

The lake is unique in that it is real shallow, so it freezes fast, and no fish live in the lake so that keeps ice fishermen away (heard secondhand so don't take my word for it). I think events last year cost around ~$75 or so, and the only requirement was that you have an approved helmet. They rent the entire lake out and have a dedicated plow truck on the ice to groom the track and also tow any cars out that get stuck in the snow banks. The last couple of times I went there was a huge oval track to practice drifting & car control, an auto-x style course, and a higher-speed road course that was maybe 1.5 - 2 miles long. Cops are a non-issue since the lake is officially rented.

Despite being run by the Quattro Club, all sorts of cars show up. Everything from Evos/STIs to 911 C2s to full-on dedicated ice racing mk1 rabbit track cars. Obviously there is a bias towards AWD cars, but pretty much anything can run as long as it can make it on & off the track.

Shit does happen though, and cars do get damaged. Hitting a snow bank at 30mph is going to rip off body parts one way or another. So if you are planning on tearing around in your daily, be careful.

IIRA, hmmmm.
If it's not organized (as in you just go out there), can you still go 2345634 mph?

all you have to do is take a ginormous cutting torch and cut a moat around the edges of the lake. the cops cant get in until it freezes again. You would have to take a ramp though

It would be fun to build an ice racer. Especially since this summer I will be graduated from school so I will finally be able to have a social life.

So what kind of motor setup do you run in the MK1 you use in the ice now? I am thinking just a decently built up 16v would do the job.

Not yet. I have McCormmack right now. I am in 3rd semester. All I have to say is pro E is dull and boring and I don't like it anymore. I had to use solidworks today to get a Truarc clip from the toolbox and I got all excited when all my hotkeys worked. Whew! /ThreadJack

BimmerTim

I vote that I like them both, but for different things and for different reasons.

Also, will you have Lee next semester?

I don't know what the schedule is anymore. I had Lee for 3rd and 4th.

dude, i've been working on Pro-E with around 30 hotkeys for 10 months. when set up correctly, Pro-E dominates SolidWorks.

I will agree and disagree at the same time.

Bryce

I will agree and disagree at the same time.

i should clarify, my opinion may be somewhat biased considering i have only used SolidWorks in school for basic projects, whereas i use Pro-E on a daily basis to create and edit advanced parts and assemblies, so i have not really experienced the full potential of SolidWorks. I for one prefer the use of sub-menus and drop down menus presented in Pro-E to the icon based controls in Solidworks. The next generation of Pro-E (Wildfire 5.0) will have only simple updates (constraints, Pro-Weld) but Wildfire 6.0 will be very similar to the SolidWorks interface.

oh yeah, ice racing sounds fun.

the motor isnt everything in ice racing. 16v would work fine. IMO i would go with a carbed 8v with some special bits and pieces that i wont mention... but honestly with any car you bring you would have tons of fun win or lose!

currently we're running an Audi 80 2.0l 8v with a shaved head increasing the compression to around 13.0:1, dual 45mm weber carbs, we also have a big cam, new lifters, valves, springs and cam followers. Techtonics header, welded up differential with modified gear ratios, porsche cv's (they have an extra 5 degrees of angle before the breaking point) bilstien coilovers, front and rear tie downs, 2" spacers on front, full cage, 5-point harness, racing seat, disc brakes all around, thats all I can thing of right now besides for a bunch of tuning on everything. Iceraceing is a ton of fun and everyone should at least try it once.

Anybody going to be racing in Mankato this weekend? I was over at Orr Autosport and Chris is trying to dial in an old ex-rally car he has for the race. It's a Mazda 323 GTX turbo. Not a Euro, but sweeeet...

here the schedule for the IIRA, they have a track on lake washington, its a really good one. they might be hosting the race there on the 30th-31st weekend also instead of having it on Lindstrom lake. might be a good way to make sure your car is working correctly.
IIRA race schedule:

Jan 9 & 10 - Mankato, Minnesota - Lake Washington
Jan 16 & 17 - Garrison, Minnesota - Lake Mille Lakes
Jan 30 &31 - Lindstrom, Minnesota - South Lindstrom Lake
Feb 6&7 - Mankato, Minnesota - TBA
Feb 20 & 24 - Thunder Bay, Ontario - Mission Bay
Feb 27 & 28 - Garrison, Minnesota - Lake Mille Lakes
March 13 - Awards Banquet - TBA

Thanks to the IIRA, I unfolded our local paper today to find an almost quarter-page picture of a mk1 rabbit and a corrado on the front page. Cool stuff.

I went once several years ago with my dad, and had a lot of fun just watching. I'm going to see if I can make it out just to spectate this year...
