View Full Version : work related advice?

I know I've spoke to some of you about this. I just really don't know what to do. I'm looking for advice with the following situation at work.

First of all my Dad's friend is the owner of the store.

Last Friday morning, my boss called me to his office. Sat me down, with my coworker as a witness. Told me that I have an "anti-authority complex" because I "don't listen to us(them)"... of which, other than the owner (him) nobody has job titles, and 'authority' is perceived. I also feel as though I have no such 'complex', and I listen to what they say to me, and do as I'm told.

He then proceeded to tell me that he's "not going to fire me, but want's me to find another job".

Then later in the afternoon (about 4 hours later), he asked me into his office again and asked me "do you have any prospects, because I'm not going to allow you to milk this forever".

I guess I'm just slightly confused, as it sounds like I'm supposed to be job hunting at work?

Several people are telling me that he's just trying to avoid paying unemployment. Looking at the unemloyment sites, it doesn't appear that I'd even qualify if I'm fired.

It's been a very troubling weekend with all this on my mind, and being that my father is good friends with the owner I'd like to not involve him.

But, I just don't really know what to do. Besides "bohica" a term I learned about while I was a micro-managed loan officer... basically an acronym for Bend Over Here It Comes Again.

:puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::puke:

I'm at work, and I'm not quite sure what I'm supposed to be doing?

yeah thats pretty much when I would go off on his ass like Micheal Douglas in Falling Down.

It's shitty man, and I wouldn't get your dad involved, because then if they keep you around then you will be that guy but I would seriously just take the bullshit factor out of it and sit down with the guy and ask him what it is he wants from you. I almost got fired about 2 weeks ago, I had a sit down with my main 3 supervisors and the first words out of my mouth were "Let me get this shit straight." And guess what, I still have my job and my job security is even stronger now that they know I am not afraid of them.

Good Luck Tim. I hope you can figure out this guys messed up ways of running his shop.

That's kinda effed up. Sorry to hear, Tim.

He seems like he is putting you in a terrible situation, to get out of paying for your unemployment.

I guess if I were you, I would look for jobs, but I wouldn't let him push you into quitting. If they let you go, they have to pay your unemployment, unless they want to go a fight it.

Maybe you should just sit down with him one on one and try to figure out just what his deal is.

Sitting down and talking face to face can be an uncomfortable task, but you sound like you are already in an akward situation, so what do you have to lose.

I would sit him down and talk with him. Find out what his deal is. Maybe you will find that his behavior is all based on some misconception he has about you that is based on what your co-workers are telling him.

Talk it over.

Sounds to me like things are too far gone to talk things out. Even if you did, would you feel comfortable there?

Plenty of places are hiring despite the shitty economy. We were just used to it being to easy to get a job that I think we've all forgotten what it was like to pound the pavement looking for a new job. Best of luck Tim.

Thanks guys, and it's already pretty uncomfortable here. Especially working with customers that I've been working with previously. Pretending like nothing is going on.

Seems like lots of people are looking really hard for reasons to let employees go without having to pay unemployment, I got let go a week ago. Hopefully I can find something soon I hate daytime tv ;)

Just don't quit if you don't have a new job lined up. If you quit, you get no unemployment. If they fire you or lay you off, you do get unemployment.

I thought you don't get unemployment if you get fired. But Tim if they let you go, I hear shane has a nice meth operation out of the back of his S4...

If they fire you you don't always get unemployment. If they can show proof of a reasonable excuse to fire an employee, they can get out of paying unemployment.

nothing else happened today...

this whole thing sucks though. I'm basically let go/fired/laid off... but I still have to work there.

and seriously... I'm not insubordinate.

I'm just confused, and it's really hard to be upbeat, content, and confident with anything :(

I really just feel like disappearing for a while... from everything.

ugh.

Not sure if your phone has a voice record feature, but if you have other meetings, I would record them?
