It's unfortunate that gymkhana, the precurser to autocross and what used to be a competition about actual talent, has been watered down into how much smoke one can make while dorifto-ing a high horsepower car no one can own.
It used to be a lot more meaningful...

holy shit magilson that vid is nuts. so competitors would have to dry run that a few times to get the jist of the course? the thought of that is close to unbelievable. that would be crazy. that guy looked like he had done that course a hundred times before.

The video seemed a bit forced and contrived. I think they tried too hard.. but it is still cool.

I've noticed that before as well. It doesn't take thread titles into account when it pulls up results.
I've had to type some arbitrary stuff to try to find a before, even though I knew what the title was. Kind of odd.

That guy obviously has more than average talent, but gymkhana, at least as it was explained to me by the old-timers in my scca region, was the same as Autocross in that you got a walk-through and then your ran. But it used to be much more about car control, i.e. you went in reverse, speed parallel parking, etc. Not just heel-toe. But knowing your car well enough that you don't look down to be sure you got the right gear, using all four limbs in a fury of motion, etc. So awesome. And as you can see you could get away with it in a much smaller lot.

the smashing of lights and the paintball and what not was all unneeded. its still cool even though it looks like most pro drifters could do the same.

Even though the Ken Block video was pretty cool, i have to agree sometimes.
I like drifting and all, but it's cool to see other people have driving talent other than sliding around and making smoke (Not knocking on drifting though, I know that takes quite a bit of talent as well, but it sure seems like gymkhana takes quite a bit more).
By the way, did they ever have any Gymkhana's in or around Minnesota? Seems like most are in foreign countries...
