Speaking of saab appreciation,

My car's blower motor decided to break for 15 mins, then fix itself. And a small explosion occurred somewhere in the mid-front passenger side while driving down a straight backroad at about 10:30 last night, at about 60. I was confused and slightly freaked out. I have no clue where it came from, or what happened. It sounded like a large firecracker went off in my pass door.

I agree, never been a fan of the airflow kit much. They tend to look a bit too chunky in my opinion. Looks like too much "mass" on the lower front and lower rear of the car. I prefer a color matched SPG kit most of the time.

Plus, those fucking after market 3 spoke wheels are terrible.

That is pretty cool.

I have to become an artist now. My wife and I went on the Lake Minnetonka art crawl and toured a bunch of galleries and studios. 8 out of 10 of the artists we went to had Saabs in their garages.

And then another funny thing happened....

People always used to stop me to comment on my cars because they were cool, modified, and what not. Now I'm driving a plain old Saab and I get stopped by yuppie coffee shop patrons. Go figure. A couple at a Dunn Bros. all yuped out wearing North Face vests Marty McFly style stopped me and asked about my c900. Then they went into how they have owned several of them and yadda yadda yadda.

On to obligatory Saab pics......

No pictures, a video of a 2000 Saab Viggen doing a standing mile at 177 mph. The car is running a Nira aftermarket engine management system, and a Holset HX40 "Super" turbocharger. I think the suspension and brakes are near stock, bodywork/wheels are all stock.

He posted a list of cars he's outrun there, and its pretty hilarious. They do these at some runway out in the country somewhere in Finland or Latvia or Estonia or something. I wish there were places around here for such shenanigans!

Last week end was the date for the first annual top speed contest and track measured 1700m this year. Drove there 287 there last year on longer track and comparable result 283 for the same distance, so a 6km/h improvement.
Was out to start theh season with a 290km/h results, but fell just shy. No problem will make a few adjustments and try again 27.6.

in-car/ track side video

www.stcf.net/viggen/lpr09.wmv

Bonus video, wind shield wiper test

www.stcf.net/viggen/lpr09_1.wmv

Short analysis
Last year run vs. the new

http://www.stcf.net/viggen/lpr001.gif

Track was damp and the start set me back some and took until end of 3rd to reach the old run speedwise. 4th pulls better and made ground, but with the added bhp apparently the engine mounts begin to spook and cannot shift fast (with less power its ok.) so the old run catches up and difference therefore in the finnish line only what I made on fifth.
From this graph it can be seen how much better the car accelerates now and where in registry

http://www.stcf.net/viggen/lpr002.gif

have not added torque to mid, so go begins to improve when revs climb past 5500 and difference increases to 7k.

Have now lifted the rpm limiter to 7500 since with a 7k limit is hard to put down a really good result since you're almost 2/3 of the run in 5th and the level of tq will rule more or less what you will achieve and I dont want to lift the tq past 650Nm or so.

But this is how its "done". My run compared to my friends 9-3 with Hx40super also.
He drove 299km/h for 1700m and 183mph for standing mile

http://www.stcf.net/viggen/lpr004.gif

He revs to 8k and as seen the difference is huge when you can pull to 260 in 4th. Of course his shift was also fast, compared to my "lest secure that the gear goes in".
Acceleration comparison between his and mine

http://www.stcf.net/viggen/lpr003.gif

That car makes around 625bhp/650Nm

That was actually my problem with the 9-2x -- they wasted a great looking external design on an otherwise badge engineered car.

They made the opposite mistake on the 9-7x, using an exterior design which was not distinctive enough from its TrailBlazer roots, but with mechanical upgrades that never got the respect they deserved because of the look-alike factor.

You have to upgrade the whole car if you're going to avoid the dreaded "badge-engineering" label.

I have no idea why we removed it other than maybe the thought that we couldn't have ANY glass on the exterior of the car?

:sadwalk: ← indeed.

^ matt that just made me laugh hysterically.

Simple pleasures?

I agree. I like the 9-2X

Yeah, they looked pretty good. Certainly no mistaking it for something other than what it really is, but I like those two. Its a shame it wasn't Saab-ized more than it was, but its a prefectly capable car nonetheless. If I was looking for a WRX I'd try to find a 92x Aero first.

And we wouldn't have had our awesome left turn biased race alignment, so we might have done worse!

Since discussing the Sonett in the spotted thread I'll have to say this is probably the only Sonett I've ever really liked. It has some custom widened "soccerball" wheels and it's a Sonett 2, which have much better proportions than the Sonett 3.
