After the great success we had last year running the 24 hours of lemons in Toledo, Ohio with a 1991 Saab 9000, we decided to take it on again this year.
The members that are active here (eurowerks) and on the team are:

The race is in October this year.
And the one we are going to is on a much more interesting track than last year:
http://www.nohiobmwcca.org/_upload/Events/nelson%20ledges.JPG
http://www.na-motorsports.com/Tracks/OH/images/nelson.gif
I am not going to speak for the rest of the team, but I don't think we are looking to increase the size of the team. In fact, we regretablly let a driver go this year to make for quicker driver change over, etc.
Our goal is to place in the top 10%.

Alright, sounds good. That track looks fun to drive. I hope you guys place above your expected goals this year!
The race we will do this year is 3-4th of October, 2009
http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/events/lamestday09/
The track is Nelson Ledges Road Course in Garrettsville OH. It is a 2 mile road course unlike the fairly boring 3/4 mile oval (with a tiny bit of infield) that we did last year.
For involvement we will have probably 2 "official" pit crew members. We already have those close to squared away with some predetermined alternates on deck. However we would be grateful for anyone who wants to spend the weekend with us, but driving down and paying for any of your expenses cannot be on our dime - we're just not that rich ;)
As we found out last year, this proves to be much more expensive that a person might assume a $500 car race would be. Cost of the car is least expensive aspect by far. Last summer I believe the 6 person team probably had over $1200/ea invested in this race - not including the price of the car, which I offered up for free from my personal stash.
We hope to get the car in track-able condition before spring so we can work the kinks out at some autocross and rally-cross events. We will also hold some sort of "Lemons Party" ;) to hopefully raise a bit of cash (BBQ + Kegs type thing with a nominal donation to the team).
Sponsorships are another great thing for us, no matter how small. We'd love to know of any place that might be interested in helping us out in exchange for ad space on the car and recognition anywhere else where we will chronicle the build and the race.
I am not going to speak for the rest of the team, but I don't think we are looking to increase the size of the team. In fact, we regretablly let a driver go this year to make for quicker driver change over, etc.
While its true that we are not going to increase the size of the official team, we would openly welcome anyone who wishes to join us at the race.
Like I said above, we cannot pay for more than 2 pit crew members, but anyone who wants to follow us down, hang out and watch, or even help in some regard is more than welcome.
It is a really fun thing to watch and I think we would appreciate any fans of helpers who want to come down on their own dime!

I think it will take a few days for that rustoleum to dry up, I sprayed that shit on there THICK, but once it dries well enough we will start adding the finishing touches to the paint, and then move on to the vinyl for the sponsors! Got most of the wiring issues we had sorted out. Battery is in the trunk, power at the motor, kill switch installed, etc. Only problem we're having right now is that the cooling fan does not kick on. Not sure why yet, we'll have to trace that down in the next few days...
Anyway, just a short video of the motor running. These Opel 2.5 V6s actually sound pretty nice, at least the intake noise it nice right now. The full stock exhaust is still on, just once we cut that and do a nice tire warmer side exit the exhaust note should sounds pretty decent as well.
enjoy!

not running the exhaust on the roof?
not running the exhaust on the roof?
I can't see any way to get it up there. There is not exactly a plethora of room around the motor to run exhaust. I suppose I could run it out the side, along the fender and then up, but that would be pointless since it would take a little bit of contact then we'd have a smashed flat exhaust.
Trust me, I've looked at it a lot, and either the exhaust would be running by rubber hoses, wiring, or fuel lines...not gonna happen. We'll have to be happy with side exit. No skin off my back, less work for me!

New ones are on the way. Also got out 308mm Frozen Rotors cryo treated brake rotors as well as calipers from a 2001 9-5 Aero for the front, and we have some Raybestos endurance race compound pads on the way. Need to get the front hubs machined down to fit the smaller rotor hats that the 308mm 9-5 Aero rotors have compared to the stock 900 rotors.

It looks surprisingly good for a white sharpie and rustoleum spray paint.
We also painted the gas hauler to match the car... :happydance:
Whee!!! Just over a week left...and we're damn close bust still have some junk on the list.
We have been pretty busy lately, scratching other items off our long list of shit to do:
Got the Takata cam lock harness installed, along with the race seat mounted to modified Saab sliders. New plug wires are in, new wheel bearings installed, 2001 9-5 Aero brakes with Frozen Rotors cryo treated rotors. Pressed in new front wheel bearings (compliments of Meyer Garage - thanks as always!), did some more minor prep work to get all the little junk up to spec...most of that is just boring detail stuff...
Our Raybestos ST43 endurance race brake pads were SUPPOSED to show up today, but the company we bought them from fucked up BIG TIME, and gave us totally wrong pads. Not acceptable for the amount of money these things cost, but it sounds like it will be rectified.
Also, I was not satisfied with the front end of the ng900, not nearly beefy enough...so I fixed that up with some tube all over the place up there
I don't think it will fend off a wall like we encountered last year, but it should help against some of the minor bumping and grinding.

Been very busy at work recently with my relativly new sales position...so I have not had the time to spend internetting during the day (which is good, really).
We drove the car a bit on Saturday and the thing was in need of an alignment in a REALLY bad way, but aside from that was more or less "done-ish"
Vs9APxloddY
The car pulled to each side really bad and pretty unpredicably, but it drove. We made a special appointment with "Jeff the Alignment Guy" for Sunday, borrowed Jeff's car dolley and brought it over to his shop. He did good work, he was able to coax more camber out of the front end and got the terrible toe-out problems sorted for us.
We took it for some shake-down runs to get the brakes somewhat bedded in and get a little feel for the new alignment. I didn't drive it, but apparently it plows about as good as one might expect
A little video of it taking a corner on cold tires:

Initial impressions of the Raybestos ST43 is that they bite well. They are a real race pad and they are priced as such, but the people at Raybestos said they are popular for the 24 hours of lemons and should not have any issues lasting the race.
Also, anyone want to have a guess at the weight of the car? Moon roof removed, only glass is the front windshield, hatch removed, since Corbeu fixed back race seat, full roll cage, 2.5 V6, 5 speed manual trans, 1/4 tank of gas.
One of us was able to get 10 lbs, and another one of us guessed the F/R weight distribution almost right on!

It's hard to be too mad. No one was at fault. The good news is, all the shit is done and ready, brakes are perfect, cage is set, so we don't have to worry about any of that, basically it's just some cheapie stuff (new bearings) or drop the new motor (was given to us at the race by another team) in.
So the cost of next race is going to be much cheaper, with just the RV and entry fee being the expensive part. No worries about buying $300 brake pads, etc.
The sponsorship was huge in helping with all of that, and it was awesome having people asking if we were associated with the EW Show, etc.

Yeah, it was a pretty big bummer.
I was bummed because I had an oil pressure gauge that could have gone in the car, but it was never at the top of the priority list...just one of those things that would have been good to do. I guess it will make its way in with the next motor.
Other than that, even when the car was probably slowly eating away at its bearing it was running great. There were certainly faster cars out there, but I had a feeling we could have done quite well had it not been for that one issue.
Hopefully we can take this chance to use a slightly higher displacement bottom end and get a little more power out of the car.
Thanks for the support, and as others have said, sorry we didn't deliver on a half respectable finish.

Our sponsor, Iowa City Saab and Meyer Garage. We had the whole warranty and service history.
Morries did the engine replacement about 60k mi ago (assuming mileage on car was correct).
But we bought the car for sub-$500 so non of us are crying (that much).

Just checked the service history that our guys in Iowa checked, the block was replaced in 1998 at dealer number 433 (claim made 07/28/98)...so complaining or letting Morrie's know about it would not do much good.

What was the issue with the fuel pump? We did fix fuel lines that was held on with no clamps and secured to the pump using tape...
Other than that I just brought about 2.5 spare pumps along. 1 full assembly, one 3/4 assembly, and one insert.
The fuel sending unit must be fubar'd because it would read 1/2 tank when it was totally full. I should probably add that to the off season "fix it" list.

the pump was newer, and the tape/glue on the lines was my doing. I just wanted the thing to run. I got in the habit of not wearing my seat belt after doing that because I figured that when the car caught on fire the belt would only slow me down in getting out.. I know it was bad but it worked.

We covered that huge hole with some sheet metal and riveted it into place. They have rules against having OEM type fuel tanks being exposed to the passenger space. And the lines have been fixed.
Good to hear the pump is new-ish. Did you just do an insert? If so, I might swap that into a housing with a functional sending unit.

No, they circumvent any race licenses by having you "buy" a license for the event, at $50. You don't have to buy that if you hold a proper race license.
Topher

No, you don't need a license. None of us have one. So you have to pay $50 for a temp license.
That diesel Benz handled incredibly. And finished in seventh place.

these are enduro races not sprint races....slow & steady wins the race.....or in this case keep putting laps down and don't come in for repairs.
This is the absoulte cheapest wheel-2-wheel racing ever.....note i didn't say cheap.....saftey equipment adds up....cage, window net, driving suit, helmet..etc...
I also like that you don't need a competition license to race, cuz it is a huge barrier to getting into the sport. The downside is, that is is less safe...ppl will race more like they do at pro-kart.

I don't think you have the stanima to be out there that long.....no offense but it is VERY tiresome....unless you have a cool suit and a drinking apperatus I doubt you can stay out there for 2 hrs or until the tank runs dry. FYI the VR6 got about 12mpg on track, the Neon gets about 9mpg, and IIRC a spec miata gets about 8.5mpg!

I'm totally mentally spent at 1h45m. Champ and JK had to literally drag me out of the car after my stint.
Racing for that long puts such a mental and physical strain on your body, something you will never understand (I didn't) until you get behind the wheel.
One guy had a heartattack and died while he was racing a year ago.

I'm not sure how comparable it is, but at our SAE Baja races, I've learned the same thing. The mental strain required reminded me of driving in an insane downpour or a snow storm, except more physically demanding as well.

I've done a 22hr straight job. Trust me, this is way worse. :)
For your first year, with 5 or 6 drivers on a team, expect to put in about $1500-2200 each.
$900ea of that will be safety gear (nomex underwear, properly rated helmet, fire suit, nomex gloves, neck brace) and your registration fee (license, transponder rental, actual registration).
As you have more questions, just let us know. We've done it twice now and have learned a lot each time.

No need to buy me beer. I love it. If you can manage to borrow the safety gear, you'll save a TON of money.
Best bet is to read the rules. Then read them again. Then read them again. Then read them again. Then have your teammates read them six times. And then read them again.

Topher

Oh and read the rules. :)
You can find decent deals on ebay every once in awhile. Some suits require nomex unders and some dont'. Mine requires nomex unders. Nomex unders and a thinner suit are still cheaper than a stand alone suit. But don't look as cool and aren't as breathable.
There is a set for "lemons" that's $425 (includes suit, nomex, gloves, boots, helmet) you'd just need to buy the neck brace ($45) and you'd be set.
http://yhst-14891464457018.stores.yahoo.net/
The helmet is the bummer, they require a full face (even if you wear a nomex balaclava) and it needs to be Snell certified, which means the standard motorcycle/autox helmet won't work. (which is annoying, because I now own three helmets)

owning your own stuff doesnt sound like a terrible idea in the long run, I mean if youre able to use it more than once its worth it.
Topher

Yup. It's a sunk cost. So each year gets cheaper and cheaper. Especially if you don't have to build a new car/cage each year. (my bad)

what about these suits?
http://wescoperformance.stores.yahoo.net/nomdrivsuit1.html
that was a bad post, sorry. after looking at tophers post with the 'complete and approved' packages it would seem silly to try and build something considering a helmet alone is over $200

I'm 100% in with Kris :). I've been wanting to do this for quite awhile and wheel to wheel racing is an absolute blast!
I've been racing vintage for 3 years now and its a lot of fun. It's DEFINITELY strenuous and exhausting racing for long periods of time. The longest I have gone is 1h 30m at Sebring in March... you get into a rhythm, but as soon as you get out of the car and your adrenaline wears off, it really hits you. I was lucky enough to have water and a cool suit also.
Topher
10-20-2009, 12:28 AM
Those are SFI 3.2, so it would require nomex unders (not that that's an issue)
So if you priced that set out:
suit: 145
unders: 70
boots: 70
gloves: 40
helmet: 200 or less or way more (remember has to be snell: http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/cmn/prodlist.jsp?store=Main&category=40103&attributes=1300002:8500015&page=3)
neck brace: 30
So about $550.
BUT, you'll likely get better gloves and boots. The Pyrotect ones are kind of cheapy. And their helmets BLOW. if you can do enough searching I bet you could find a nice HJC/ICON/etc Snell rated helmet for sub $200.
Champ
10-20-2009, 07:32 AM
When Topher says SNELL, he means SNELL SA 2000 or newer.
There is also a SNELL M and SNELL K (motorcycle and karting).
I think within the next few years it will move to SNELL SA 2005 so that's something to consider as well. Although any NEW helmet you buy will be a 2005, and if it's not you shouldn't be buying it.

Also, Jessop and I picked up one of the possible donor motors last night and now it's at my house - just waiting for a chance to figure out how we are going to get the car to my place, then we can begin rejuvenating it!
I'm really pumped to see other people interested in doing this! Like Champ and Topher have said, we're glad to offer any sort of advice, and if we're going to do the same even it might be a good idea to try to pool resources for pitting areas, transportation, tech/pit support etc.
Oh, and as far as being able to do a long stint in a car, I too have done 18+ hour drives, but this is like doing full, wide open throttle driving on crowded city streets with everyone else around you doing the same. Essentially the worst possible rush hour traffic on a 2 lane road but everyone is going 60-100mph. It is stressful. It was really stressful for me having never done anything like it last year, but after about 2 laps I had a shit eating grin on my face (but was still shaking in my boots) after 10 laps I was having the best time I had ever had behind the wheel of a car.

Pulled the new engine apart down to the crank so we could check it out. Thing looks really super clean except one journal. We are looking to see if we can get it fixed or we may also pull out another crank from the 9-5 engine we have (the one we got in Ohio) since they are the same crank.
