When I accelerate the car hesitates and kinda sputters w/ the cel flashing. So I'm pretty sure it's a misfire, but not sure if it's from a plug or coil, and which cylinder it's coming from. How can I know for sure?

How can I know for sure?

Get it scanned. We can do this at the shop today. Just give call. Also I keep the coil packs in stock.
This sounds like a coil pack.

lol water bottle in the dark lol... dont think that would work too well on a 1.8t

autozone scans check engine lights for free, it will at least tell you what cyl is misfiring (if there is only one. maybe have 2-3 misfiring/??)

You can also pull the coils one by one to see which one is misfiring. If you hear a change in idle you pulled a working coil. If you pull the coil and it doesn't change then that is the one that isn't working. Just change it out and you're be good to go (till the next one goes anyway).

On the subject of crappy coils I converted all of mine to the "e" style when my last one blew. These are the bolt down version which apparently are better quality and last quite a bit longer.

You can also pull the coil out, put a screw driver into it where the plug would connect, then start the car.

A good coil will arc between the shaft and the metal shielding around the side. A dead coil will not arc.
